No Sound Device
Ok, I've tried on my own for the last three days and I give. I am a relative newbie to linux, so I don't know all the places to look. Of all the distros if looked at, I definately like Mepis the best. (this is my first Debian based). Anyhow, I digress. Everything seemed to install just fine. I've upgraded all the components. But I still have no sound.
I am using 2003.10 with an Asus A7M266 MB, Duron 900, On board C-Media 8738 Sound. I have installed the system to HD. After I login, I get a message from artsmessage as follows:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened(no such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null
output device.
I installed sndconfig. When I run it, it says there is no PnP device installed, so I select it manually in the list. No sound. I looked in /dev and see a sym link for dsp->dsp0. There are dsp0 - dsp4 there, each 14b in size. I have turned off PnP OS in bios, There is no setting in bios for APCI. I have verified the sound device is enabled in bios. (it works with other distros as well as LooseDoze).
I am at a loss. Please Help!(Ok, I know you will. Just had to say it anyway)
Thanks in advance
Danny

I have find another solution to "/dev/dsp: No such device"
Thanks for your suggestion. I have experienced the same problem after an upgrade. But what is quite funny it that I found an opposite solution than you: Comparing with another computer running Mepis, I had supposed that to much modules were insered and that they were insered by alsa. I saw that mine was running alsa after the boot and not the other one. So I tried to remove alsa. But even after, the sound didn't work and the script /etc/init.d/alsasound was still executed. Eventually, I decided to rename the folder /etc/alsa to /etc/alsa.old... and it fixed the problem...
