hey everyone, i have just recently installed mepis on my computer and everything is working perfectly except i
can't get my speakers to work. i have a soundblaster Live! 5.1 with Boston Acoustics digital speakers. the digital speakers work well with windows xp. If i am running Mepis analog headphones work fine. i found the toggle for digital/analog but that didn't work either. i am very new at this so if there is more info you need please ask because i would like to resolve this issue asap.
thank you

Actually, both cards should come included by the 2.6 and 2.4 kernels on MEPIS versions 3.3 and higher. You should find the 24Bit modules in /lib/modules/2.6.10/updates/alsa/pci/ca0106/snd-ca0106.ko and /lib/modules/2.4.29/updates/alsa/snd-ca0106.o.
As for the sound blaster 5.1 card, it uses the emu10k1 module and is also included. If you run the following command and receive several lines returned, then the modules are installed and you most likely need to run alsamixer to turn up volume levels or turn on the digital output:
lsmod | grep snd

Same Hardware/ASLA/EMU FOUND/KMIX LEVELS ADJ/NO SOUND

I have the exact same sound hardware setup:
SB Live 5.1 digital [not dell]
Boston 2.1 digital desktop speakers
ASLA enabled
/lib/modules/2.6.10/updates/alsa/pci/ca0106/snd-ca0106.ko
I found this, command line?, and clicked on it. I was asked which program I wanted to use to open it. I ran it using the command function, same result.
I have switched from XP PRO SP2/OFFICE XP to MEPIS 3.3 [you may applaud now] and I want to keep using it, but dammit, I need sound!! ASLA reports that my card is supported, and the drivers show as being istalled. I have toggled every button, switch, and slider in KMIXio I could find. I have dbl-checked the control panel and the sound system is enabled.
And after all this, I still have no sound. So, hopefully one of you kind regs will post a solution. I have searched the entire forum, and I am exhausted. Any assistance is appreciated.
Sincerely,
-J.
PS I havent learned to compile yet, it seems much harder then just clicking thru .exe's[whimper], but I'll try to learn.
Live! 5.1 digital out.

Start KMix and make sure the IEC958 Optical Raw is OFF and SB Live Analog/Digital is ON. Worked for me.

Hi Zach,
I've just installed Mepis myself, and haven't gotten my SB Live! 24-bit card to work either. As a result, I'm using the (poor quality) motherboard audio at the moment.
I've tried the 'alsaconf' command others have suggested, but it hasn't worked for me. However, I found something of interest in the MepisLovers forum today ... a HW Database. Go to
http://mepislovers.org/hwdatabase/
select Search Hardware
set the manufacturer to creative, and select audio under device type.
There are a couple different responses for the Live! variants. Mine (24-bit) indicated that the drivers weren't included on the CD, but gave upgrade instructions (which I'll try this weekend).
Hopefully this helps.
Cheers,
AJ
