Nvidia

Today i installed simply mepis 3.3 final and simply mepis 3.3.1 test to install nvidia and produce this how to, because after normal install and selecting nvidia i never get the drivers to load properly so i use the way detailed below.
i have nvidia geforce2 mx 400 64Mb and a ctx pr711t monitor
i make no promises as to this how to and you use at your own risk however with the above nvidia installed well
procedure:
1. insert mepis cd and at first screen press the F3 button to select your desired resolution ( i use 1280x1024 ) then continue loading mepis.
2. log in to desktop and select the icon named install me > mouse and display > monitor and enter your monitor details
3. restart the xserver e.g ctrl-alt-backspace
4. log in and at desktop select install me again > install to hard drive
5. at the point where you can choose both kernels or just one i choose just one the 2.6 kernel
6. install grub as desired
7. enter user details and network etc
8. at services to start leave the nvidia unchecked
9. set localizations
10. finish and re boot system
11. when logged back in and at desktop use console kpackage or synaptic to update repositories
12. once updated open kpackage and select the new tab
13. next select file > find package > in the box type nvidia
14. find and mark the following packages
nvidia-kernel-common 1.0.7174-3
nvidia-settings 1.0.3-1
nvidia-glx 1.0.7174-3
nvidia-glx-dev 1.0.7174-3
nvidia-kernel 2.6.10 1.0.7174 mepis 3.3
nvidia-kernel-source 1.0.7174-3
click on install marked
when finished close and return to desktop
15. open mepis os centre > mouse and display > nvidia tab > tick official nvidia driver > click apply and close
16. restart xserver e.g. ctrl-alt-backspace
17. you should now see the nvidia splash screen, log back in to desktop
18. to check direct rendering is enabled open console and type glxinfo and press enter ( the first few lines will tell you ) e.g.
[~]$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.3
server glx extensions:
thats it well done and enjoy

Many will probably be happy to know I just got my TNT2 Model 64 - 64 Pro 128 meg card working with Hippy's method after enabling all the repositorys in synaptic ! I had given up on this card , because none of the recent or old drivers would work for me . You should know that I did a complete reinstall to avoid problems with the vodoo 3 card that was installed .
By the way its an Evga card . Your mileage may vary depending on vendor . I have seen diffrent results with various cards , it seems to be a matter or luck . As you can guess Im stoked about this but still have one problem card to check out . will repost when i have time to try my luck with it .
Good Luck jim

return thanks

hippy, do you mean that with 3.3.1, you can let MEPIS install the nvidia driver during install (and that works), rather than installing the driver later?

A piece of advice for Nvidia

A piece of advice for Nvidia users. If the drivers are working for you it's a good idea to pin them, read here:
http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/index.php?title=Pinning_nvidia_drivers
Use the appropriate version numbers for your case.
Pinning stops drivers from being upgraded at the next upgrade so you'll not risk breaking them when Debian release a new driver.
