apt-get problems straight away

Hi all,

After having mepis on vmware for a few weeks I decided I was happy enough with it to install it properly on my hard drive. Initial problems are:

1. that my wireless LAN card can't see my wireless router's network (no worries, got a normal LAN card plugged in for now anyway, looking at playing with ndiswrapper to solve that)

2. that firefox didn't work straight away (I went to about :config and changed the network.dns.IPv6.disable value to True and voila, it works!)

3. the real problem: apt-get.

Output from apt-get update:

I'm behind a D-link ADSL modem-router with NAT enabled if it's relevant. I must admit that though I'm pretty fresh with regards to Linux I don't really get how apt can fail even though http and ftp both wotk fine?

Cheers

apt-get

you don't say what version you are using i would suggest that if you can get Mepis 3.3 as a newbie myself it contains alot of useful apts. and Synaptic Package Manager just works easier. I find it really seems more intuitive than using apt-get.
simplify...simplify

connection timed out

Some broadband gateways (modems) can't handle multiple high-speed dns requests. The best known culprits are the Actiontec DSL gateways, but others may be effected as well. Contact your ISP & obtain the primary & secondary DNS server. It should be a long number like 123.456.7.89

Go to your "MEPIS OS Center" (or MCS in older versions), find the misc tab & enter those DNS server numbers. That solved the problem for me.

Try MEPIS...It's curtains for Windows!
