MEPIS 3.3.1 START UP PROBLEMS. PLEASE HELP!!!

I just recently downloaded and burn a copy of MEPIS 3.3.1. I installed it on my DELL 600M Laptop. I then edited my repositories so that I could have everything available. I did a total upgrade after reloading my repositories and rebooted.

Now mepis hangs up at the KDE start up screen after logging in. I erased the hard drive and started over and did the upgrades again and the same thing happened. So it must be one of the upgrades from one of the repos that is causing the problem but I don't know which one.

The system takes about 5 minutes for me to use the laptop. It hangs just when it says "Initializing System Services" during the KDE start up screen. I don't know what to do from here so I need help please.

don't upgrade...

Seems to me to be the most obvious thing. Upgrade is not always a good thing. Remember Mepis is based on Debian unstable, so things might break. I would recommend doing a selective upgrade of packages, and if you are worried about security, get an email subscription to the Debian weekly (www.debian.org). They will issue security warnings every week, so you know which updates to perform.

Just install Mepis as is and upgrade those packages you must. If something goes wrong, you'll know which package is to blame, so yoy can back out of it.

Smart upgrade will mean you

Smart upgrade will mean you are performing a dist upgrade (calculating new dependencies and stuff). Normal upgrade means packages will be upgraded as is. Again, I would advise against full blown upgrades. First of all because I do not see the reason to do so, secondly because you won't have a clue if something breaks..... Upgrade packages only if there's a security fix or if you know a new version holds a feature you cannot live without. If you choose to always want to have the latest and greatest, you're living on the bleeding edge. Ever wonder why it's called like that? Smiling

Start Up Problem solved

I got the problem solved. It was the loopback interface. It was not starting after a reboot or startup. After I reenabled it, the system started booting back up just fine.

The other thing was the when Samba was starting, the serial interface startups would try to start again right in between nmbd and smbd so I removed set-serial and etc-serial from /etc/init.d since I don't ever use those ports on this laptop.

I was able to shave an extra 5-10 seconds off by doing this. I also removed PCMCiA and Mepis-PCMCIA from the /etc/init.d and that made the system boot a little faster by disabling the cardmgr program that I was asking about in another post.

The only port that I have use for on this laptop is the USB. So I disabled floppy, serial and PCMCIA. Now, can anyone tell me how to disable parallel support as well.

I am working on ways to make Linux boot faster.
