No Parallel Port Detected under Linux (Mepis, DSL or Knoppix)

I have an issue similar to: [http://www.mepis.org/node/553]

I am trying to select a flavor of Linux to install, and I have settled on MEPIS. However, I seem to have this problem where no Linux seems to detect my Parallel Port. I am running an IBM Thinkpad 600x.

At in the above forum post - I too have already gone to the printer configuration and there is simply no parallel port listed as something that lives at /dev/lp0 - the LPT is simply not being detected/installed as a valid device.

Do I need to go into bios and change some settings so that it will be autpomatically detected during startup.

P.S. I too run WinXP and the printer works there - I assume no hardware fault.

Thanks! cafr

Beatrix does Parallel!

I happened across the 'liveCD' Beatrix recently, looking for a 'pocket' sized installation for an old Tosh. Satellite. Not only did it install the parallel port, but also the driver for 'Laserjet Series' and works perfectly. It runs on 2.6.7 - just wish it was a full distro! Kanotix is excellent by the way, but same problem. Maybe somebody will see this.....
