I personally didn't install

I personally didn't install it (and right now I'm on dial-up and it looks like big download). However, use Synaptic or apt-get it should be pretty straight forward.

Post questions on www.mepislovers.org too -- very helpful community

no

what kind of problems, I hadn't any

I installed Evolution and

I installed Evolution and use it with my ISP. That works fine. That's as far as I've gotten up to this point, though I hope to get Evolution synching with my Dell Axim x3i eventually. Allegedly this is possible. Someone over at MepisLovers forum managed to do it last year, but I think their messages on the subject were lost when MepisLovers switched to a new host awhile back. At least I can't seem to find the messages now.

Running Mepis 3.3.1

I can't find evolution

... so, that would be a problem installing it, right? I opened Synaptic and did a search for evolution and didn't find it. Do I need to download something first?

Thanks!

evolution

I am using mepis 3.4.3 and installed evolution with synaptic. It installed and runs without any problems.

Need help finding the package

I really need help finding Evolution. Does anyone know where I can download it? I can't find any files for it in my distribution, which is only a few weeks old. If it's something that comes on the "second CD", then I wouldn't have it, because I downloaded the ISO file to burn just the main CD.

Thanks!

Check The Repositories?

carpeweb, what happens when you perform the following as root in konsole:

apt-get -s install evolution

The "-s" is a simulated installation (nothing gets changed on your system). Do you get any "not found" messages? Because I just did the test on my older 3.3.1-1 system and it is found. There are actually quite a few packages connected with evolution, but the one should bring in the other dependencies.

If the simulated install works (and you also see no removed messagess) then it's probably safe to install.

Evolution Not Found

Hi Jon,

Here's the result of apt-get -s install evolution:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package evolution is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://apt.mepis.org etch/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/apt.mepis.org_3.4_dists_etch_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Package evolution has no installation candidate

So, I'm showing that I'm a total noob here, but should my next step be:

apt-get update

?? or does that need an argument like apt-get update evolution ??

Anyway, this is progress.

I might as well ask one more related question.

I found a site with evolution for download, but it says evolution is meant for GNOME. I use KDE. Will I have to switch to GNOME? That's not a deal killer, even though I like KDE.

Thanks!

evolution not found

Hi Carpeweb,
I am using 6.0 beta 1 and can install through synaptic okay and evolution 2.6.1 runs with no problems you will most probably better off waiting for the 6.0 stable version that should be out in July.
But if you want to download current version of evolution try straight from ubuntu:
http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Fmain%2Fe%2Fevolution%2Fevolution-plugins_2.6.1-0ubuntu7_i386.deb&md5sum=92066b507635aa52a26631fe39997c32&arch=i386&type=main
Beware kernels of version 6.0 may differ from your version so may cause conflicts

Hi Carpeweb,
Sorry last link was evolution plugin
Try This one:
http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/dapper/gnome/evolution
Go down page to download evolution and click on relevant link amd64,1386 or powerpc unless you have amd64 or powerpc the 1386 should be yours.

Some Progress, But Still Not Available

Hi,

Here's what happened when I ran apt-get update and then apt-get -s install evolution:

root@1[~]# apt-get update
Ign http://apt.mepis.org etch Release.gpg
Get:1 http://apt.mepis.org etch Release [98B]
Ign http://apt.mepis.org etch/main Packages
Get:2 http://apt.mepis.org etch/main Packages [58.1kB]
Fetched 58.2kB in 3s (19.1kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done

root@1[~]# apt-get -s install evolution

Building dependency tree... Done
Package evolution is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package evolution has no installation candidate

So ...

some of the errors are no longer a problem, but it still can't find evolution. I have downloaded the .deb package to my desktop. Do I need to unpack that and then try again? If so, to where should I unpack it?

Thanks!

Some Progress,But Still Not Available

Where you have installed evolution deb package on your desktop click on file.
This then should open in kpackage automatically highlight evolution then click install tab and follow instructions.
This procedure should install all of it for you.

Not Sure It Installed

Here's what the install window says in kpackage:

...Desktop/evolution_2.6.1-0ubuntu7_i386.deb' ;echo RESULT=$?
Selecting previously deselected package evolution.
(Reading database ... 75251 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking evolution (from .../evolution_2.6.1-0ubuntu7_i386.deb) ...
RESULT=0

I don't see Evolution anywhere in KMenu, so I'm at a loss as to how to open it. It seemed as if the first install had some errors, but I failed to capture that screen (at which point I went through a test install and got the above messages).

Dazed and Confused, but Thankful!

OK, I went back and uninstalled and tried to reinstall. Here's what I got:

So, it looks to me like I need all these things, starting with gtkhtml3.8, through gnome-icon-theme.

If I install evolution-data-server, will it have all the pieces? If not, how about some other package?

Thanks!

Not Sure It Installed

When you installed from kpackage when you get result=0 at the end that means it has installed okay with no dependency problems normally the next step you did where you got result=1 means there is a dependency problem can cause problems.
Uninstall evolution again and install deb file you downloaded through kpackage once more so you get result=0 at the end and you should be okay.
Then if you look at kmenu go to internet tab and look at list on right evolution should be there you can right click and add this to desktop if you wish.
If not on list in kmenu still in kmenu again type evolution in run command click on run and this should open evolution if installed okay.
At least your still trying to resolve this issue well done for trying.

Odd Results (Not Good)

Well, when I click "test" and try the install, I get Result=0. However, when I unclick "test" and try again, I get the long list of (missing) dependencies and Result=1.

Next steps?

Thanks for continued help; I'll keep trying as soon as I have something new to try.

Odd Results (Not Good)

In my opinion I may be wrong but because your using different version of Mepis I would wait for Mepis 6.0 to come out about mid July and use evolution that has no dependency problems with new mepis version.
If you start fixing dependency problems in your mepis just to run evolution you may find it will corrupt other programs or even worse stop you booting into mepis.
Could you not run Thunderbird email program temporary until the new version comes out no point in you trying 6.0 rc2 if final release is coming out.

I can wait

Thanks for the heads-up. I can definitely wait, assuming that the version coming in mid-July is not beta.

I'm using Kontact, except that I just posted a separate message about a problem with an unseen instance already running. I've also tried T-bird. Both Kontact and T-bird are fine for now, but I want my permanent solution to have more similarity to Outlook. I can also still use my other (Windoze) box, since I won't be making the conversion until I finalize on a Linux solution (which I hope will be Evolution).

Thanks; I'll check back after 6.0.

I Can Wait

Hi Carpeweb,
It will be worth the wait.
Like you I prefer evolution look. I am just lucky I dont have problems with betas. Below is comment by Warren regarding new release.
MEPIS continues to fix bugs and prepare for the final release of 6.0. Regarding the release schedule, Warren said "We're getting more feedback from the community than ever before. A lot users have reported that MEPIS is working perfectly, but others continue to uncover bugs. We want this release to be the best it can be. So due to the outstanding bug reports, and the fact that the restructuring of the MEPIS utilities is incomplete, and the upcoming Independence Day Holiday, final release has been rescheduled for July 10. This is meant to be a firm final release date."

can't install evolution

I think the most likely reason for being unable to install any particular program is that your repositories
list does not contain a url of a repository that contains that program. There are at least two ways to solve
this problem:

1) Identify such a repository and add it to your list by editing
a) the list through Synaptic -> Settings -> Repositories or /etc/apt/sources.list (with a text editor as root),
b) updating apt through either Synaptic -> Reload or apt-get update
c) and then installing through either Synaptic or apt-get.

2) installing a version of MEPIS (e.g., SimplyMEPIS 6.0rc2) which already has the appropriate url(s) in its
repository list.

Note that, in general, each version of MEPIS requires its own set of repository urls.

Unfortunately, because I am no longer running any 3.x release, I can't supply the url(s) you need.

Best wishes.
