sandisk cruzer mini 1GB and SD cards...

Folks,
I plugged the cruzer mini into a usb slot and expected to see the hotplug tool throw up an icon on the desktop for it. No joy. Even using "mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1" didn't help.
What I did find out was that if I plug the cruzer in BEFORE I boot, or if I plug it in and reboot then the icon appears on the desktop and /mnt/sda1 shows up in devices on Konqueror, and I can save or remove files from it. Also, I can unmount it, remove it, insert it and remount it. BUT, if I don't have it plugged in when I boot my laptop and plug it in later, it will never augtodetect AND it cannot be mounted because there is no device in /dev.
Concering SD Memory cards common with digital cameras (small ones or big ones). They are not detected at boot or any other time. They simply don't exist as far as mepis is concerned. SUSE would automount them with ease.

I'm using 3.3. As it turns out a relative of mine, who has owned a Gateway m675 for 14 months installed SimplyMEPIS-3.3 over the weekend and EVERYTHING works on his laptop: sound, flashdrives, etc., whereas on my laptop sound comes out through the MICROPHONE port only.
Concerning the flashdrive, I discovered that if I use
fdisk -l /dev/sda
first, then do the mount command, the flashdrive mounts and appears on my dekstop!
??
So, I have effective workarounds for both problems.
In comparing my laptop bios information with my friends, we discovered that in the critical PCI info where mine misbehaves I have
....Unknown Device:603
while he has 601 in all those, and the other bios places.

What Mepis version are you using? I have my Cruzer mini detected, it's 128 mb. I was starting to have trouble with that and an SD card mutli reader. So instead of just upgrade by synaptic I just dl Mepis 3.3.1, installed it and everything works again.
Just a thought.
Just thought of something that may or may not help. Is your Desktop behavior such that hard drives are on your desktop? Can you see other harde drives on your Desktop?
