Printer (not) detected at last :-O
How can I make my Epson Stylys Photo R-300 being detected in Mepis?
Actually it is detected, if I command "kudzu -p" in Konsole.
All the record is there, together with manufacturer's Plug-N-Play
information.
However, when I try to add this printer, I cannot, because it is absent
in the list of possible printers. The list in Printer wizard looks like:
</p>
<pre>
USB ports
USB-0
USB-1
USB-2
USB-3
</pre><p>
Printer wizard lists only the names of the ports, without any printers
detected under these port names.
BTW, Vector SOHO Linux readily listed "Epson Stylys Photo R-300" under
"USB-0":
</p>
<pre>
USB ports
USB-0
Epson Stylys Photo R-300
USB-1
USB-2
USB-3
</pre><p>
There was no problem in adding the printer there.
Any hint about how to dupe Mepis into detecting the printer will be appreciated.
Best wishes.

Printer again.
Further investigation:
If I start Mepis under the 2.4.29 kernel, it correctly detects the printer, adds it to printer menu and prints the test page.
However, if I restart the system under 2.6.10 kernel, the previously detected and listed printer remains in the list, but becomes inaccessible. Here is the IPP Report.
Can anybody shed light on what is happening? Why kernel 2.6.10 cannot do a routine operation that kernel 2.4.29 does out of the box?

Now I tried plugging the USB connector off and replugging it into another USB slot:
What does it all mean? How can I communicate with the printer?

So easy ... to the extent of stupidity!
I just checked which modules were loaded when I boot the 2.4.29 system.
Then I did the same check after booting the 2.6.10 system.
THE "usblp" MODULE WAS NOT LOADED.
Next I inserted the "usblp" line into /etc/modules file, rebooted the sysiem, et voila! here is the printer detected and ready to be tested.
Dear MEPIS developers, will you please in future post a note somewhere when you do such jokes!
I am going now to set up the scanner. What kind of hurdles await me there?
