Mepis 3.3.1 KDM does not start - status?

Just out of curiosity,

What's the status of the issue that KDM does not start on certain machines? For the record: I burned another CD, installed from scratch, and the issue remains. A couple fo days ago, one of my colleagues installed 3.3.1 on his laptop: same issue. I even tried performing an upgrade of all packages, to see if maybe this would fix it: alas....

From what I read, mostly laptop users are deealing with the problem, but I'd like to know if at least it is known what the problem is...

Can You Give Some More Information?

Hello carlops:

I'm running kdm and lots-o-goodies on my laptop right now. Can you please provide some more info? What type of laptop do you have? Can you run Mepis from the CD but just not run after install? What resolution are you using? Are you getting any error messages? Does X even try to start (do you see a black screen and an hourglass) before it stops again? I'm sure I'll think of more questions to annoy you with after you reply Smiling

Jon

Hi Jon, I gave my system

Hi Jon,

I gave my system details in some earlier post. From what I understand, this issue does affect some users, but I do not have any further specifics.

Yes, X starts, even the KDM logon screen is shown and then it disappears and I get console logon screen. Tried all the tricks in the book: change screen resolution, logon and startX, change nvidia driver for nv, update etc. to no avail.

Anyway:
Dell c840 latitude, Pentium IV M 1.6, 256 Mb, Nvidia Gforce Go 440 card.

Cheers

Dang!

Well I give up Smiling

Actually, I don't remember the name of the log file, but have you tried starting up X directly from a terminal session? If you are at a simple "login" prompt, enter your login id to get to a bash shell prompt. I like to first press ctrl+alt+f2 (or f1) to go to a simple login session since session f7 is normally reserved for X-window.

Once there, enter "startx". The system will attempt to start X. Watch what happens (and this will probably be in session f7. But mainly, it's probably going to fail back to session f2 (or f1). Make note of the error messages. It's gonna be a bunch of junk, but let me know what you find...

Work around (locales)

Having read someone's comment regarding locales, I decided to install without setting the locale (i use US intl keyboard and en_IE@EURO...

That WORKED!!! So, the issue has sth to do with locale setting.....

Well That Was Out of The Blue!

carlops,

Great to hear you got that problem solved! It's funny how these systems are so complex that tweaks of that nature can cause failure (frustrating too). It's a reminder (again) to me that upon initial install of a system that I shouldn't mess with too many of the default settings _until after_ the OS has been installed on the hard drive!

Great job!

Jon
