Sound Card Video Conflict ?
Hello,
I am new to this. Hope I've posted to correct place.
I have finally got the NVIDIA Drivers to work and test ok with GLXgears and Tuxcart. The problem is that eg PPRacer crashes to a black screen. On reinit of X with < Ctrl Alt Backspace> there is a popup that says.
Sound Server Informational message....Error while initiating the sound server. Device can't be opened for playback. (Device or resource busy.) Sound server will continue using the null device.
Following this message PPRacer will run.
When I ticked no audio in PPRacer options then the program runs without crashes.
Likewise if I remove the sound card . I get the same message but the game runs.
I thought it might be an IRQ conflict and changed slots but it made no difference.
NVidia FX5200. ForteMedia Fm801 soundcard. Amd K6-500 processor old 1999 ALI bios
Any thoughts on what to do to solve problem ?
Thank you,
John Lewis

conflict
Hello John
Just read your post and it sounds like you do have a conflict that can probably be resolved with a bios tweak or in some cases by changing a jumper on the sound card.
Im not familliar with that sound card , in most cases its best to have a look and see if any jumpers are available to change . Allso you might try changing irq assignments in the bios from particular settings to auto or vis-versa , not knowing your particular bios makes it impossible to make an ironclad recommendation .
I think youll figure it out . Good luck !

Sound Video card Conflict
Thanks for suggestion pmshah,
The board is an old ASUS p5 A-B ancient 1999 Ali Bios and an AMD 500 mhz processor. It has only 3 pci slots and 2 isa.
I tried your suggestion but no joy. Also tried different sound cards and irq's. NVIDIA is on irq 11 and sound on irq 5 at present.
With no card the system starts with null device and message re not finding dsp device. The game then works. It also works if I turn off audio in the game. With audio enabled the system goes to a black screen with an operating mouse and nothing else. restarting X gets a message that soundcard is busy and null device will be used. Game now works but of course no sound. Also no joystick action. There never was.
So I'm at a total loss now as to what next to try.
