Newbie...Linux network
Posts: 1
I hope that what I'm going to try and do is possible, and even a good solution.
I would like to build a Linux server (MEPIS build).
The other devices that would need to network with it are a XP SP2 desktop, an XP SP2 notebook, and an HP Printer. I have a wireless router so that will be the central point.
What are the limitations on running some sort of file server on the linux box?
I haven't really been able to find any help documents out there that are similar to what I'm trying to do so any help or advice would be appreciated.
Edit: I just found some useful stuff here:

Any other help with links is appreciated.

The short answer is yes you can do it, and no real limitations in setting up a Linux Box Server.
Now the expanded answer depends on what you will use the server for, serving up files on your home network, or on the web, or perhaps a simple ftp server for file storage etc.
But in any case Yes Linux/Unix has been serving up files before windows as I understand it and more reliably.
Hope this helps
This is a rather generic

This is a rather generic question, and the generic answer would be: no problem. Mepis comes out of the box with a fully functional Samba server. Samba is a SMB (Server Message Block) server that acts as a Window server. So, you can create file and print services on the Mepis box that are available to windows (95-98-2000-XP) clients.
Further details as you go along.......
