parallel port printer

Sam,
I have the same problem in SimplyMepis-3.3.1 kernel 2.6 but do fine in kernel 2.4
Try selecting the older kernel 2.4 during boot up. I am unsure of why this is a problem but others have reported same.

HowTO Parallel Printer
Fellow Chipheads,
Mepis-3.3.1 (kernel 2.6) would not recognize my parallel port so I could not setup my Canon BJC240 parallel port printer with KPrint. . Of note Mepis3.3.1 (kernel 2.4) worked fine.
So I updated all my cups and cupsys files with synaptic. Now KPrint recognizes my parallel port and sets up my printer fine.

I happened across the 'liveCD' Beatrix recently, looking for a 'pocket' sized installation for an old Tosh. Satellite. Not only did it install the parallel port, but also the driver for 'Laserjet Series' and works perfectly. It runs on 2.6.7 - just wish it was a full distro! Kanotix is excellent by the way, but same problem. Maybe somebody will see this.....

I HAVE TO BE CLEAR ABOUT LIVECD BEATRIX,,,

don't give up on MEPIS

Carab,
Do not give up on Mepis. The distro is sound and the forun very functional. I have tried many (including BeatrIX) and find them limited. Just stick with Mepis and learn all the kinks and you will be rewarded with a stable OS.
