Camera / Mass Storage Device
Posts: 410
Hi all
Well here is my story on this.
Strange, I have a Vivitar Camera, and it's a Mass Storage Type, and works with other distro's
Mepis would not hotplug, and even on re-boot, or end current no hotplug.
After fooling around with fstab and creating directories mnt/camera etc. no effect.
Could not get working.
I deleted and undid what I attempted to do and was going to use Win Xp for my camera at least so I can get my photos off of there. FYI dual boot bye the way.
So anyhow, I decided against using XP since when I booted I was reminded of the updates to the OS and virus update and etc. etc. etc.
So I instantly re-booted thinking I would work on it with Mepis a little more.
And what do you know it's now working perfect for no appearant reason.
So not sure why or if turning off the computer and re-starting had anything to do with it, but it's working.
Nice
Any clues why?

Thanks for the reply
Yes it was plugged in when rebooting, however only accidentally.
It does work perfect, however not in digikam.
Only as Mass storage device and comes up on desktop as sda1 hard drive, but when opening the sda1 icon there are my photos.
This is typical for Mass Storage, however if I unplugg the device the icon remains. and if If restart after unpluggin device, then folder is gone.
However if I plug in the device while computer is running I get nothing.
So will changing the fstab effect digikam, or hotplug ability to detect when plugging in?
Please advise and thanks again.

Like I say, I've had no luck with hotplug yet, but at least an fstab modification gives me the ability to mount my device any time I need it.
When the device is plugged in on reboot, it creates a dynamic entry in fstab. Moving this entry to the static portion of your fstab will create the sda1 icon whether or not your device is plugged in. E.G. /dev/sda1. You may have to create /mnt/sda1 (one time I had to do this, one time I didn't... not sure why) For a point and click newbie like myself, create /mnt/sda1 by opening Konqueror Superuser mode. Navigate to /mnt/ folder and right-click create new folder name it what your dynamic fstab named it.
When you perform these actions, you will have an icon, and when you plug in your camera, you have to mount the device, but the icon should be there. Do some googling on "flashdrive mounting" issues, and you'll find the answers of folks who know their stuff a little better.

Thanks,
I have moved the line from dynamic to static, and the item appears on desktop. But when mounting it says ( not a valid block device )
This makes no sense since this device works when turning off computer, then restart.
Any other pointers ?

Agent 86,
I got that message once for my own flashdrive when I was tinkering around with the settings. I had created some sort of trouble by asking two different programs to get information from the same device. (I was using the Mepis Info center to get info about the device at the same time I had it mounted in Konqueror). I don't remember what I did to fix it.
Make sure that your sda1 folder appears in the /mnt/ folder in root. (Just open up that home icon at the bottom of the screen and click on the red root folder on the left, then click on mnt. My sda1 folder appears even when no device is plugged in.)
That's as much as I know. Spend some time googling the forums, try some of the tweaks that others suggest, you'll find the solution.

Did you have the camera plugged in by any chance when you rebooted? You mentioned rebooting earlier, but it seems you might have been trying to change a "hotplug" setting (no luck with that here yet).
If you booted with the camera plugged in, you'll find it in the dynamic section of your fstab file. Copy the info to the static section (I think I got into trouble once pasting onto the end of the static file... put it up in the middle somewhere)
Now, I've never had trouble with my camera, a Canon A75. I ran Kmenu/Graphics/digikam and the software identified and mounted my camera. But I haven't used it for basic storage, either, so that might be a different case.
Good luck
