i installe dmepis om my desktop ,, good software . it is not detecting parallel port,,i failed to install parallel port printer hp640c ....i went for bios settings ,, again failed to detect parallel port ,, i am working without printer..

Are you running kernel 2.6.7 ? Kernel 2.6.7 does not support parallel port and i have been looking for solution but have not found one yet.
If i boot to 2.4.26 kernel then it detects parallel port and i can use it for printer. So check which kernel you are running and try your second kernel (i assume you have one) if it detects parallel port.

I've been trying various liveCD distros on a Toshiba Tecra 9000 for about a year, looking for a version to install. I prefer Kanotix from all I've tried, but none have allowed me to to install my Laserjet 111 printer as they don't find the parallel port, despite various 'fixes'. I happened across Beatrix recently, looking for a 'pocket' sized installation for an old Tosh. Satellite. Not only did it install the port, but also the driver for 'Laserjet series' and works perfectly. It runs on 2.6.7 - so what do they do differently?
