Netgear WG311T wireless pc nic

Folks, I've noticed some of you have had success with this card, tho for the life of me I cant find a post with how the success was achieved.
I have a small home network that I'm migrating to mepis (from win), I have this card in two of my machines but cannot for the life of me get em to work (under mepis)
My Simplymepis server is fine, its connected via cat5 but I can get neither of the other two machines connected.
Whats the secret?
I've just installed SimplyMepis 3.1.3-1
I'm running with a netgear wireless router/switch with sid broadcast turned off (tried with it turned on)
I'm using a 128 bit WEP key.
I've tried with both the hash of the key and the key itself
tried with s: in front of both
I've got forced 108 set at the switch, which I prefer to leave on (there's a heap of wireless networks in my area and this is just one more level of security, nothing but a netgear 802.11 super g can connect to it)
I suspect my problem is more core to the drivers.
I'm a linux newby, although in a former existance (more that 10 years ago) I used to actually know some stuff in *nix (solaris and sco)
vi grep and find are my still friends

it is detected as ath0 on my system
I'm running a 3.3.1 system with the 2.6.11.6 kernel and its extras (which include the atheros driver)
I typically set SSID and key in the wireless tab of OSCenter
then set dhcp in the ath0 tab ...
