Is there a KDE welcome sound?
Is there a welcome sound when bringing up KDE (mepis 3.3.1)?
I don't have one, wondering if there is a problem.
My sound works playing cd's.
There is a message at KDE startup "sound server info message error while loading the sound driver....continue using the null output device".

Thanks for the tip! At least
Thanks for the tip! At least I get an unpleasant sound now!
My ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc was like yours except
Use external player=false and I updated this to =true and I get a very rough sound when signing on or off.
I tried to change the sound to something more pleasant using kde control but there is no change to the sound.
I still get the message:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for capture (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
And as I said earlier, there is no problem playing cd's.
I took out the (misc)
I took out the (misc) section after saving knotifyrc
The bad noise is gone. The problem is still there. CD player still sounds good.
Would you see what you have for this file?
file:~.kde/share/config/knotify.eventsrc
[startkde]
commandline=
logfile=
presentation=1
soundfile=KDE_Startup_1.ogg
None of my warning messages give off sounds.
Sound card = Soundblaster 16. I've used it several years on other linux distros going back to kernel 2.2
Soundblaster 16
I'm going to hazard a guess here. I've got a soundblaster 16 in one of my boxen. If I recall correctly, there are several versions of this card, at least two chipsets made by different manufacturers, and multiple revisions of each of the respective cards. Alsa and earlier versions of Mepis had detection problems with these cards in the past, although it was fixed for the version I have. I imagine its a real hastle for Warren and the Alsa developers trying to keep up with that mess.
I'm not sure what to suggest as a solution. I've been building alsa from scratch lately, but... hmm. Run the command alsaconf in a terminal console as root or su. This will search a database of sound cards and allow you to install the nearest match. Maybe thats all it needs.

PS I'm assuming that you have sound from CD because it is being handled directly by the CD-Rom hardware. Might be mistaken.
Went back to win98 on this
Went back to win98 on this machine and startup sounds worked.
Also have man 9.1 on it, and startup sound no longer works!
Tried alsa again selecting I think it's vintage cards (warns there might be problems) and it never completed, then I had temp problem signing off and on kde, but that problem went away itself.
I'd better back up before fooling around anymore!
Thanks for your help - I'll take this up later.
