Epson Stylus Color 740 printer - prints garbage

On Mepis 3.1.1 - Epson Stylus Color 740 printer USB prints just garbage. Canon 4400 serial (which I use for black-white only) works altho slow.
Both printers work on older linux distros.
I'm using CUPS here and the old distro.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Try different Epson Model Printer Drivers

For example, try using drivers for the 760.

Thanks for the reply.

Tried several other drivers - no go.

SOLVED.
Copied the driver from the other distro located in /etc/cups/ppd of that distro, then applied it to the Epson printer in Mepis.

That still doesn't answer it

What about the rest of us that only have one *nix box?

I'm running a Mepis install upgraded to Debian Sid and am haveing the same problem with the printer barfing random code instead of working with the cups driver. Does anyone have a reccomended configuration?

Mepis 3.3.1 - I am using

Mepis 3.3.1 - I am using CUPS+gimp-print v4.2.7
Mepis 3.4.3 (hopefully final version) in test - it works too - using CUPS+gutenprint v5.0.0-cr2 (not sure about that cr2)
The printer runs slower than on winxp

What version Mepis? Did you try deleting-reinstalling the printer?
