kscd playback problems

CD works perfectly except with kscd
When I first installed mepis the playback was OK I then went into kscd config and ticked the box to play on load of CD. Thereafter no matter what I try the CD hops from track to track and the speakers make a machine gun like noise until I tahe mepis down. I also noticed that the sound chip has an alsa association but kscd while letting me choose the alsa configuration throws the setting away and uses the arts config.
