Hi
I have a problem when ever I try to open a folder within Konqueror. The message I get is..
KDEInit could not lauch /home/stewart/Documents. No matter what folder I try to open the messsage is simular.
I have tried rebooting but it make no differance.
Another error message I get is if i double click on a drive icon within Konqueror the following message is seen...
Error - KIOEexe
If I am running at root there is no problem I can open any folder

I have Simple Mepis 3.3 installed on the hard drive. It has been working fine for a few weeks now.
If I single click on an hda device the message I get is...Retrieving data from devices is not supported.
If I single click on the small + next to the hda device the tree opens, but if I single click on any folder I get the message...KDEInit could not launch '/home'.
However if I right click on a folder and choose 'Open in a new window" I can open the folder in this new window and get to my work.
Please note the hda device that I single click on is mounted.
Any ideas where the problem could be, I don't realy wish to make a fresh installation to fix the problem but was thinking about adding a new user and transfering the files I need to the new account.

itsmeagain, can you open a Konsole and post the results of the following commands back to us (there are spaces in the commands below):
cat /etc/fstab
ls -lad /home
ll /home
I'd like to see how your permissions are currently set up (perhaps they've been "tweaked" a little).
Have you recently done a "smart upgrade" or "dist upgrade"?
Have you already created your new account(s) or is that what you're preparing to do? Because if you are planning on copying your home area, then you will also have to change some permissions and ownership on the new folder(s). Also, if you are wanting to make multiple changes, there is a "skeleton" account in /etc/skel that has the basics of an account. You can add some things there.

Yes I did an upgrade using Synaptic (mark all upgrades) and went for it, but the problem was there I think before the upgrade.
No I have not made a new account yet.
Thanks Stewart

Well Stewart, the permissions look OK. You sure have a lot of partitions
Since /home isn't explicitly stated in your /etc/fstab, it must be a directory under "root" on /dev/hda7. But off-hand, I don't see any problem.
How are your starting Konqueror? Are you doing it from the "House" on the KDE task bar or are you single-clicking on an icon representing one of the parititions, or some other way? If you start it a different way, do you get the same error responses? I'm wondering if the command invoked might be messed up (but I doubt it).
Also, have you modified your own account? User stewart has to be part of group "users" also. And open a Konsole (again) and "ll /home/stewart" to show the permissions on the directories/files under there. If you have any files that you don't want to display for security purposes do not post them. But I'm still thinking it's a permissions change that has happened to part of your system.
One other thought is this: Have you had to shut down your system "incorrectly" or restart X recently? Sometimes permissions on (fake) devices used by X can get set incorrectly because you were using root and "broke out" the wrong way leaving root the "owner". This is a longshot so let's examing the directory/file permissions side first

Hi Jon
My machine is due boot, hda1 is XP, hda5 and hda6 FAT32, hda7 (Mepis) and hdb1 is a FAT32 salve hard-disk. This combination has been working fine for some time.
I have started Konqueror in two ways, from the house on the task bar and from the house in the Menu list. Both give the same result and Knoqueror will open up. If I then left click once on the Devices icon the message 'Error-KIOExec' 'Retrieving data from devices is not supported' is seen.
Here is the Konsole info..

I've not had to shut down the machine incorretly. The only thing that I can add is that after the Synaptic upgrade, I rebooted the machine and I could not login in GUI mode. The way I got round this rightly or wrongly was to run Mepis from CD, opened the MEPIS OS Center and Reinstall X config. This got me up and running off the hard-drive again. Please note the Konqueror problem was present before the upgrade. I tried the upgrade in order to see if it would fix the problem.

Too Early To Tackle This Problem :-)

Stewart,
Man, you found a good one! I'm getting stumped. I did a Google search for "Error-KIOExec" and there are a number of posts, but not much in the way of "solutions". The closest I can find is that it may have to do with kfmclient. I'm going to post some of the links I found that look promising, and then after that I'm going to give you a suggestion of something that might work at least to isolate the problem.
Here are the links:

***** and below is the "solution" posited *****
KDE 3.3.2
If i login as root they work fine.I kinda half-solved it .....
Control Center->Desktop->Behavior->Device Icons
Unmark "Show device icons"Make new links from the devices to the desktop from konqueror.
OK, based on some stuff in the posts above, there was one clue about the .kde directory (or something in it) getting messed up. One way to test that is log into your system as root and then open a Konsole. (By logging in as root you will not lock any of the KDE resources for user stewart).
From the Konsole:
cd /home/stewart
mv .kde .kde.save # Note leading periods on each name
Exit out of the Konsole and log out of root. Log back in as stewart. KDE should rebuild a whole new desktop so you will "temporarily" lose things (they should remain in .kde.save).
Test a couple things out and see if you get the same responses. If you continue to get errors, then the problem is somewhere within KDE. If things start to work, then the problem is with some file in .kde.save.
Let me know how this works
To anyone else lurking on this thread, feel free to offer any other suggestions

Jon you are a genius I did what you suggested, logged in has root, opened a konsole
cd /home/stewart
mv .kde .kde.save
Logged in has stewart and Konqueror worked perfect.
Thanks a million, I did'nt realy wish to make a fresh installation.
How did you learn so much about Mepis Linux? I get a little confused with all this command line stuff.
Regards
Stewart

Glad to hear I could help!
If there is any "stuff" that was part of KDE that you wanted and that was "lost" because of changing the .kde folder, then you can probably get it back by looking through the .kde.save and moving it back out. But tread carefully, ya don't want to reintroduce whatever it was that messed you up!
I learned about Mepis the same way you are: by practicing, playing, (breaking), fixing
Now that you've joined The Gang, feel free to contribute whatever help you can.
Also, there's a recent post on this forum about learning more about Linux. Look it up because there are a bunch of links within so you can learn more about the command line and other geeky things!
Enjoy

A Couple Things to Check
Posts: 5513
First, when you post back to us, what version of Mepis are you running? Do you have it installed on your system or are you trying the LiveCD format?
Next, KDE is set up to open most things with a SINGLE-CLICK.
Root will have all access. That's why it's root
