DSL on USB

I have ordered DSL from the local ISP where I have my dialup. Got the box of stuff which includes the modem/router, wall wart, USB cable
and dsl cable a pigtail line filter and some instructions.

No Linux instructions, natch. Smiling

My first hookup will be on USB. A local store
told me no big advantage to buying an ethernet
card for my five year old Tyan 1840. he said that ethernet only significantly improves upload
speed for such as interactive games.

So here's the system:

Tyan Thunder 1840
PII 400 mhz cpu Slot 1
384 mem
Matrox Millenium vid card
USB-2 card plus 2 onboard USB-1 connects

I installed the card under Windows just to
see what would happen. The USB-2 card has a driver disk and that all went ok.

--> How can I check the number of USB ports
and styles available on my Mepis?

--> Which connect will perform the best?

USB-1 on the board
USB-2 on the riser card.

You may have to use ethernet

Your modem probably came only with Windows USB drivers. If you use ethernet, it'll "just work".

USB vs Ethernet

Your local store gave you some inaccurate information. Sad Use an ethernet connection instead of USB. Much less trouble setting up and as you've already been told, it'll work in Linux. Smiling

ethernet

loninappleton, when i first got into linux, i had similar advice as you and knowing no better i tried to connect using usb, nightmare, anyway i got an ethernet card off ebay really cheap and cable connected and all was recognised during boot up.

recognize usb

Looks like I will not get the new motherboard because
of a snag on rebates.

I can go pick up an ethernet card on deal at Best Buy,
but I'd rather swing with the USB.

Are you saying there's no USB hookup and that
special unknown drivers are necessary?

Wait... nope no info on the old box from the
board.

I know that on startup, Mepis detects a Yamaha
product which it's not sure about. My Yamaha
RP U100 receiver is connected via USB.

So can drivers be downloaded for Linux to run
dsl USB? Isn't there a special repository for this
sort of thing?

Eye-wink

Modem?

What brand modem do you have?

I'm going to get that as backup.

But if there's drivers for this Actiontec GT701 why
not give it a whirl? If I were an Actiontec GT701 Linux
USB driver where would I hide?

see if these links helps you

ActionTec linux Drivers

Look at Google for RealTek RTL8139...links are to sites with drivers for Linux & ActionTec/RealTek DSL Modems. HTH
