Can't upgrade mySQL Query Browser and many other apps
Posts: 40
I was trying to upgrade mySQL query browser and mySQL admin GUIs through Synaptic and getting nowhere. Each time I run the upgrade I get this message:
W: not in gzip format: libgnomeprint2.2-0
W: not in gzip format: mysql-query-browser-common
W: not in gzip format: mysql-query-browser
...E: Too many errors while retrieving bug reports
I'm confused. Is this the result of incompatibilities with the Synaptic bug report checker app (whose name I can't recall) and the repo or is this the result of the recent release of Sarge and repo changes or what is going on? I get this same message when trying to upgrade other apps as well. And since we're talking about the repo, does anyone know when will the latest KDE be available in either the Debian or the Mepis repos?
apt-listbugs

yeah I finally did get mySQL to install. It was apt-listbugs that has been causing my upgrades to stop. Apparently this tool was reporting almost all of the download files as being "not in gzip format". I'm not quite sure what that means or if it's a good thing. I figured out that I can upgrade as long as I don't try to pull down too many of those "not in gzip format" files down at once. So I end up upgrading 3-4 files at a time. Is the apt-listbugs tool broken by the Sarge stuff or is this its normal way of trying to stop me from breaking my system? I've been having frequent issues due to hardware problems which I posted about a while back. I have since done something to address the hardware (replacing my Dell MOBO for the 2nd time!) but have still had frequent crashes in apps. Most notable crashes have been Java apps where I get JVM crashes and an hs_err_pid log file. That's what started me off upgrading in the first place.

Cliff,
If you're using synaptic, did you make any changes in your repositories lately? Also, have you clicked the Reload button to be sure you have the latest packages?
The bug check tool is called apt-listbugs. It ties in to synaptic via apt-get, which is the real update tool; synaptic is a wrapper around it.
How are you trying to "upgrade" the individual packages? Are you right-clicking and choosing "Mark for Upgrade" or "Mark for Reinstallation"?
Yes, my guess is that some of your problems are related to the release of Sarge. It's easy to blame that when I don't really know
I have a process that runs daily and checks for upgrades. mysql-query-browser has been in the "held" category for some time. Although I tend to be a little more aggressive when it comes to upgrading than some of the other posters here, if a package is "held" I leave it to the OS to be the "smart one". A package is usually "held" when there is a possibility of "dependency-hell" or too many bugs in the newest version(s) to be reliable.
If someone knows differently about these specific packages and a safe way to upgrade them without your system turning into a boat anchor I'm sure they'll post; otherwise, I'd recommend being patient
