Some USB ports not working in MEPIS (poss. irq prob.)
OK, for some reason when I boot my BIOS assigns my onboard sound, my ehci usb controller, and an ethernet controller IRQ 11. It also assigns 3 other components to irq 3.
In MEPIS only two of my USB ports work (the ones using the OHCI controller), but the sound works, and I don't use the ethernet ports so I don't know if theyr'e working.
The weird thing is that if I boot up using the SLAX Live CD my usb ports work fine.
ANy ideas? I've posted this problem on the MEPISLovers forum but nobody offered any help other than saying they think my USB ports are bad, which they are not.

What sort of PC?
USB 2.0 or 1.0?
What version of Mepis?
How many and what sort of USB devices are you using?
What chipset is on the mobo?
Is Mepis installed on your hard drive or are you running it 'live'?
The sharing of IRQ 11 is common for usb/nic/sound.

It's a computer I built and it has..
MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum mobo (nforce 4 Ultra chipset)
1 GB Patriot DDR 400 RAM
XFX Geforce 6600GT PCIe
Hawking HPW54G wireless card
& the usb controllers are onboard.
I installed a new kernel (2.6.12.3-onion1) and now the usb ports work, but now my wireless card won't work so I can't get on the internet. I'm posting this from the live cd.
Is there a kernel between 2.6.10 and 2.6.12.3-onion1 that I can try that may support my wifi card and my usb controllers?

Flame,
Can I call you flame?
Glad you got the usb working. Not sure why someone told you that you had 'bad usb ports'. Obviously, they were rather mistaken.
For wi-fi, you will need to compile 'ndiswrappers' for any kernel besides the stock Mepis kernel. I suspect there is howto floating around here someplace (check the wiki).

Eureka! I got everything working pretty much.
I flubbed something up and I couldn't get the ndiswrapper installed, so I reinstalled MEPIS and then installed kernel 2.6.11.6 and now the only problem I have left is my realmedia video files playing choppily.
I have a feeling that it has to do with the nvidia driver not working properly.
THanks for your help!

I'm assuming here your ehci is an actual controller card and not built into the motherboard.....
If it is an IRQ problem, you can try to resolve it one of two ways: Move the controller card (your ehci) to another slot or go into your CMOS setup program and assign the card a different IRQ in the BIOS. Hoping of course that MEPIS doesn't rearrange the IRQs.
Keep in mind not every USB controller card is the same. I've had mixed results using various cards in my machine and others I've worked on. Sometimes a card that will work in one machine, won't in another.
You may wind up having to try another card.
