I can't watch my TV
Posts: 7
Hi,
I'm been Mepising for a few days now. Everything else is just fine, but I have one little problem. Hope someone can help me with that.
I can't get my TV-card working.
In Ubuntu I used 'Tvtime' and that worked perfectly. In Mepis I've tried Tvtime and few other TV-softwares, but no one works.
I suppose that I don't have the driver in my system that allows to use TV-card. I do not really understand Linux yet, so I don't know how to install drivers or at least how to check is there any -- nor do any needed setups. Luckely I have years experience with Windows and DOS, so I probally understand if someone try to help me
In console, one tv-soft will say that '/dev/video0' isn't there -- or something like that.
I've also tryed to read instructions from these sites, but can't understand because I'm so new with Linux:
http://www.hauppauge.com/html/linux.htm
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_pci_878.html
http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-view_faq.php?faqId=1
Synpatic package manager reports following error: http://apt.mepis.org/3.3.1/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz: 404 Not Found
Does that maybe be linked to may problem? How can Mepis-repos be offline?
There's some information about my Mepis that I got from console:

PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this
** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to
** so I can fix the driver.

ok. we found that the module bttv is not present in your system, it is normally located in /lib/modules, try the following command:
find /lib/modules | grep bttv
You need to locate the software package that installs this module.
I found that the needed files (bttv and others) are present as long as you have the kernel package instaled, doesn't matter whether it is 2.4 or 2.6. I assume that the kernel is already installed because you are running linux, the needed packages are kernel-iamage-2.4.6 or kernel-image-2.6.11.6
If you don't find the file bttv.o inside /lib/modules, there is something weird in your system
found it

I have both kernels: 2.4 and 2.6 -- using now 2.6. I know that bttv should include in the kernel, and been wondering how bttv can be missing.
But it seems to be here:
root@1[~]# find /lib/modules | grep bttv
/lib/modules/2.4.29/kernel/drivers/media/video/bttv.o
/lib/modules/2.6.10/kernel/drivers/media/video/bttv.ko
But when I type that (again):
root@1[~]# insmod bttv
insmod: can't read 'bttv': No such file or directory
...it's not found. Weird.
What do you think about my Synaptic-error?

Isn't it the primare package place for mepis-users? Is your mepis repos working? I just thought maybe something general is missing on my system because of that.

Thanks for your help, but still it isn't working.
I know now that bttv is the needed module for my tv-card and some reason it's not loaded at boot. That's why my tv programs are not working.
I tried to boot with kernel 2.4, and it work for a while! This time bttv could start and tvtime worked. But only for 15 minutes until it crashed. I did boot again, but bttv couldn't load again no more.
I tried to run xawtv and tvtime in console, and it says:
root@1[~]# xawtv
This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.29)
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct

videoinput: Can't wait for frame 0: Keskeytetty j??rjestelm??kutsu
Your capture card driver: bttv video
is taking too long to provide frames to tvtime. This could be due
either to a broken capture card, a signal thathas become unstable
or very noisy, or a driver misconfiguration.
Please report this on our bugs page: http://tvtime.net/
I also tried to edit /etc/modules and put bttv and some other lines there, but it didn't do any help.
At boot system reports error that might be the problem. It says that I need 'lirc-modules-source' to build kernel support for hardware.
Do you know how can I get that 'lirc-modules-source'?

lirc-modules-source
Posts: 4864
is only needed if you want to have an infrared remote control working.
that is secondary.
first you need to get the correct parameters for the tvcard.

Hi,
I have an old video card with a bt878 chipset. I use xawtv to watch channels.
About the drivers, issuing the command "lsmod | grep tv" I got:
tvaudio 12520 0 (autoclean) (unused)
bttv 93248 0 (unused)
i2c-algo-bit 7080 1 [bttv]
videodev 5632 3 [bttv]
i2c-core 12228 0 [tuner tvaudio bttv i2c-algo-bit]
soundcore 3332 6 [bttv snd]
Check your results.
I don't know the chipset of your card, just try to issue:
insmod bttv
and let me know what happens. Try to get more info about the chipset.
I have an existing device named /dev/video0
