Newbie w/Live CD Problem
Posts: 25
After I login as "demo" with "demo" as the password. I cannot figure out how to get beyond the message "demo@tty1[~]$" that appears. The book does not cover this problem.
I can run Linux to run with the "Moving to Linux" LiveCD without any problems so I know my pc is working.
PC Specs:
AMD K6 3D Processor w/64 Mb Cache
533 MHz
512 Mb memory
20 Gig HD
Any guidance is appreciated.
Newbie w/Live CD Demo Problem

The cd came with the book, Point and Click Linux, and was not opened. The cd booted and on my Emachine with no problem. The problem has to be with the Compaq pc but not sure how to diagnose and fix the problem.
Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Are You Saying...

...that you are not being taken into KDE? The Point & Click Linux version is a little old now, but it should work. After choosing user demo you should be taken into a somewhat lengthy startup process of KDE. Have you tried logging in as user root (password root)? Does the same thing happen; that you are not being taken into the X Window environment? If that's the case then X Window is not starting!
Please describe a little better what you are (are not) seeing, because it sounds to me like you might have a problem with starting X!

Newbie w/LiveCD Boot Problem

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I solved my problem by choosing the Safe 2.4 boot option.
My Compaq 7470 pc is older than I thought.
Does booting into Safe 2.4 compromise or disable any of the SimplyMepis software, programs, or hardware detection (printer)?
Thanks.

nothing is disabled

it uses an older kernel, and may not support very new hardware. usb won't be perfect with some devices
This sounds like a bad cd

This sounds like a bad cd burn. I recommend you try again, burn the CD on CD-R (not RW) at low speed.
You might wanna try the CD on a diffent machine, see if it runs there. Also, if you set any special boot option, don't. If you did not, press F3 (not sure if it is that one) to boot with a different screen resolution.
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
