Linux Newbie Needs Help
Posts: 1
Hello,
I'm fairly new to Linux, I tried Linspire for a week, but had serious sound issues with it, So far, my hardware seems to really like SimplyMepis, and I'm very pleased with it so far.
My problem is this, I Just installed Mepis today, after playing around with the live CD for a couple days, and I did my first Synaptic Upgrade/Install session, selected a few games, and updated present software via "Smart Update"
It seemed like everything was fine, but none of the programs I selected are in my K-Menu, did I do something wrong? I found them in my file system with Konqueror, but as a Recovering Microsoft Addict, I really would like to access them from K-Menu.
Any Ideas as to how I can remedy this?
Thanks in advance...

Use default upgrade

Select default upgrade in your synaptic settings. Do not use smart upgrade. It may work, but there is potential that it may remove packages and mess up your system. Carefully check what synaptic is doing before you Apply. Make sure you don't remove packages you need.
In Linux, it is not necessary to upgrade unless you have a reason to do so.

JohnTzu, you will find as you get used to mepis that some programs you download via apt or synaptic/kpackage get added to the menus straight away, and some do not. for those that do not you can do 2 things,
reboot or click the K (button) then system then settings and selecting menu update tool, just select scan and when done apply and you should be good to go
