Yep! USB is detected. Try 'meauto' and you'll see what I mean! Actually Mepis is not intended to replace WINXP 'plug and pray' but rather Linux is Linux, warts and all! We have to remember the whole point of Linux and open source /GNU and all that - what do you whingers really expect? IF you want am OS that automounts everything, bells and whistles etc etc then pay (an eye and a leg!!!) for WINDOWS XP/ Longhorn - the choice is ours, really.
I am speaking from experience, so what is so bad about having to 'mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ??? AS long as the OS detect your hardwaRE AND THAT IN ITSELF IS A TECXHNOLOGICAL MIRACLE (if you think about the myriad possible devices that could be connected to a PC! Always try MEAUTO iiif you get your hardware detected then it is a matter of experimenting! If you expect your OS to work without a hitch then where is the fun and enjoyment in the first place? THat is the whole point of an alternative OS to MS - -is it not?
If you want flawless (and boring) get a MAC!!!
LInux has KUDOS but use it to learn about IT and computers!!!!
LINUX IS FUN if you think it is hard work then, unfortunately, you should be using a commercial OS - This is my opinion anyway and I have been using computers since the early 80's Sinclair ZX81 and all that so I think I know what I amn talking about - with all humility!!! I do do it for fun however so I understand iiif some people can't fathom why the heck 'waste' time with an OS that does not do what mswindows DOES
"...sock it to Bill!!"

OK, do the following:
- boot the PC with the USB plugged in
- in menu System -> Filesystem start file manager Super User Mode
- go to /etc and open the file fstab
- find the line that says sth like /dev/sda, sda1 or similar
- this line will be in the dynamic section. move it up to the static section
- save the file, done
