Official Nvidia Driver won't work
I have an XFX Geforce 6600 GT PCIe vidcard and an MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum motherboard, and everytime I check the box to use the official nvidia driver the next time boot when X is supposed to start my screen goes blank and goes into standby mode.
I'm using SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1 and kernel 2.6.11.6 and have the corresponding nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel installed also. Any idea why this is happening?

Did you uninstall all
Did you uninstall all previous nvidia stuff beforehand? I had to do this before nvidia would install correctly.

I tried uninstalling all the nvidia stuff, then I installed nvidia-kernel-common, nvidia-kernel-source, nvidia-kernel 2.6.11.6, nvidia settings, and nvidia glx.
I then went to MEPIS OS Center and clicked the "official nvidia driver" check box, and clicked apply. It then said to restart for it to take effect. I restarted and the same thing happened. When X is supposed to start I get a blank screen and my monitor goes into standby.
x window
i had to install the x-window-system to make mine work. it seems like a bug in x-11 just dosen't agree with the new nvidia driver's for some people. you can use synaptic or apt-get install x-window-system. when it asks choose the kdm window manager.good luck.
Ok, I used Synaptic to
Ok, I used Synaptic to install x-window-manager but still no luck. Same thing happens. Do I have to uninstall anything once I install x-window-system?
no
You can uninstall and purge the config if u want to but its not necessary. I see in /etc/default in nvidia-glx there are 2 options try them can't hurt right. Try reinstalling the x-window-system but this time use the other xserver XDM i think it was. Also check in /var/log see what error messags u are getting if any.
nv and nvidia
Have you edited /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 for Nvidia settings?

What all do I need to change in XF86Config-4?

This is what I had to do and it worked for me on Mepis 3.3 using kernel 2.6.12.3-onion1 and nvidia drivers .7174. I uninstalled nvidia-kernel-common, nvidia glx, nvidia kernel 2.6.12.3-onion1, went to etc/x11/xf86conf-4 and changed the "nvidia" bit in section devices, driver to "nv". I then rebooted, installed all the nvidia stuff again, then changed back the xf86conf-4 file from "nv" to "nvidia". Then control/alt/backspace (or reboot) and the nvidia flash screen appeared with nvidia working.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: I have an old nvidia card, it could be that your card, which I presume is new, may not be recognised by Mepis yet.
My card is fairly new so
My card is fairly new so that could be the problem.
In my XF86Config-4 file my
In my XF86Config-4 file my driver is set as "vesa" not "nv". Does that mean that my card isn't recognized by MEPIS?
Before you install the
Before you install the nvidia drivers in my instructions, change vesa to nv. Once you have installed the nvidia drivers then change it to nvidia.-----and cross your fingers.
If it doesn't work, then revert back to the original.

I changed the driver to "nv"
I changed the driver to "nv" and hit ctl-alt-bckspc and it booted me out to a console login screen and wouldn't let me startx.
Ok, if you haven't managed
Ok, if you haven't managed to get back to the gui, you can do so by using the live cd. Boot from the livecd and login as root. From Mepis installation centre, select "Install X config file" option and click "Install". Then reboot.
This should put everything back to how it was (pre-nvidia) days.

Sweet, I never got the "nv"
Sweet, I never got the "nv" driver to work, but I went ahead and installed all the nvidia stuff with Synaptic and then edited my XF86 file as you suggested and added two lines from another post about a 6600 GT card and it works. I can now play Tux Racer and use the OpenGL screensavers.
I thought my vidcard driver problem was causing my realvideo files to play choppy but even with the nvidia driver working they are still choppy so if anybody knows a fix for choppy realvideo please let me know.
Thanks again to everyone who replied for their help. I greatly appreciate it.

Your PCI Express cqard is working?
I didn't think that Linux nvidia supported PCI Express yet.
Also the WIKI should state these things as I got real lost.
