Any tutorials about 'mounting' 'devices'

I am now totally confused about the procedures and their underlying rationales of mounting devices; why my painfully fstab-bed /mnt/camera appears and /mnt/flashpen when I plug it in on its own and is 'ln' supposed to make a temporary or a permanent link?? All very puzzling to me.

Does anyone know of a simple and understandable tutorial or even a book (remember them?) about this please?

I live in hope!

There are many posts here on the site also about mounting devices using Mepis.

mounting and devices etc.

Many thanks Joe for the cogent and practical link.

I was surprised by the separation of /media and /mnt directories... isn't a USB pen (or USB removable HDD) a file system too? Is the assumption in the file system standard that 'filesystems' are part of the fixed media? If so, then aren't things looking a bit muddled in Standards Land?

I also notice that my Debian-based MEPIS OS, using kernel 2.6.10, has no /media directory and no udev although I could locate hotplug.

Is pmount a gnome-related command? Not on MEPIS (KDE-centric) either!

Thanks again,
Pofadda
