SoHo on SCSI

I tried installing this on a SCSI system (pentium2-400 with 128MB RAM).
There is a trick to evading kde for the install, and it will be useful if others try this on normal user Mepis.
when you get to log in, log in as root but choose the failsafe desktop (button bottom right of box)
then you have a very basic gui with a console. use this console for the commands
cd Desktop
oscenter &
which after five minutes brings up oscenter and you can install.
my install failed because grub wouldn't install on sda.

i've tried Debian Sarge on this box today but the install is complex. Yes it starts but I can't get an Xserver, and it doesn't recognise the DVD burner on hda.
Maybe manually installing grub will be the way to go.

Thats too bad i was hoping by now scsi support would be a little better . If memory serves the reason i quit hasseling with it was kernel choices or lack of kernels with ide and scsi support rolled in .
AT the time i didnt have the knowledge to roll my own, still dont know if i could handle it . Editing kernel config options is still touch and go for me. But im thinking that is the solution . Grub on the other hand i dont know about .
Do you think its KDE that doesnt want to play nice with the X system ? Allmost every time i install Debian i have X configuration problems . Auto config of x should use meauto or something similar to make it easier.
Anyway let me know if you have any success with it , time permitting will dig mine out and give it a try i downloaded Mepis soho last night.
jim (edit) After thinking a while i had processor support problems too ! Will have to try a diffrent board with more modern cpu .

tried again

and have got this set up; installed onto sda and installed grub for me too. i used kde this time, it might make a little difference.
started to play now, need this running as a backup system in a couple of weeks so I can rebuild the kernel on the work server (or more likely, put mepis soho on that too, as i need to be able to record dvds
New MepisLite has SCSI and USB support + SOHO ?

Hi,
In case you didn't see it on www.distrowatch.com today. I thought I'd pass it along. I was pleased MepisSOHO worked on my Via-C3 box. Now I just have to learn how to make Webpages, and put up a FTP/Webserver behind a DSL router. Is their a new how-to, manual, or book on the way for those of us late to the DOT-COM era to use this version?
Thanks,
ChiJoan

Hello drlizau i just read both your recent post about installing Mepis and was wondering if other versions will install on scsi . I have an old rig with a couple of 10gig seagate scsi mainframe drives , the ones that are meant to run 50 years . Havent played with it in a long while but think it might be fun to experiment with the k62 500 MGHZ rig just to see if it will work . In past tests with older rigs running IDE drives i find Mepis works very well , in fact very usable and capable of extending the usefulness till they die .
I have no particular need for SOHO but if thats what it takes to run the old dog ill give it a try just to play with it again . Havent kept up with scsi support in a while but it piques my couriosity . In theory at least these machines could be usefull .
Regards jim
