Can communicate with the modem, but can't establish a dial tone

I have a smilar problem. although sometimes mine just times out. im trying to connect sbcyahoo.

next try setting it to dial without dialtone

but... are you in the US or not - this makes a BIG difference.

I have a Compaq V5119US laptop with a Conexant AC97 Soft Data/Fax Modem. Mepis detected it on /dev/modem as SmartLink Soft Modem. The query works, but when I try to connect I get the message No Dial Tone. I have tried removing the check mark from Wait for Dial tone before dialing and it still will not connect. I am in the US. I am not sure what verion of Mepis I am running or how to find out, but the install cds that I used came with Linux Format Magazine "Get started with Mepis Linux". Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi I have the same issue, I did come across a solution however I couldn't find the NO CARRIER problem which is solvable in KPPP but no instructions on howto solve it.

basicly involves getting a file called SLMODEMD.gcc3.tar.gz.

Then extracting it and typing:

cp slmodemd /usr/bin/

slmodemd --country=USA --alsa hw:1 (or hw:0)

then leaving the terminal open, select /dev/ttySL0 in KPPP .

But again you will get a no carrier error which you can solve doing some tweak or something (couldnt find out howto)

THIS may help, maybe you won't get the carrier error. Anyway If anyone has a better solution please tell as its annoying,. My modem is a AC97 Data Fax Softmodem with SmartCP.

I'm sure someone knows the solution but remains silent, so it be nice to lift the silent and help out us noobs because I can't update my MEPIS install without getting this sorted.
