c42 usb printer not responding

running simplyMepis 3.3.2, the usb devices is seen by the os, but can??t be added in KDE (adding printers is greyed out).
The same goes for my USB Epson perfection 2400 scanner - not addable.

I tried to kudzu -ls, which (sort of) found them -but no go.
I have tried the KDE adding process earlier, where it was possible to add the printer & scanner - but they didn??t print/scan, which is why I tried kudzu.

Now they are both no go.
