Migrating to Mepis from xp

I have just fully migrated over to mepis now and thought i would make this post up to help with others doing the same.

Internet Favorites
Mozilla firefox in windows can import favorites from internet explorer, you can then use the same file firefox uses to have your favorites in mepis.
In mepis, Load firefox and goto file=import=from file.
locate the following directory on your xp partition (make sure it's mounted)

c:\documents and settings\username\application data\mozilla\firefox\Profiles\profilefolder

select bookmarks.html, and thats it, the same bookmarks at windows' firefox.

If people could put there migration tips here, it should make a good resource.

moving

I copy mine to a floppy disk as i have 5 computers i set up so it is easier to move and find the files i need. On my floppy i have >ms sans serif, the text file for that missing gpg-key,apt-settings and a copy of the whole .mozilla file.

email

I don't know if you have to migrate emails but I remember that I used 2 PCs, one with windows, other with Linux, I started an IMAP server in Linux, I conected the Windows computer (Outlook Express) to the IMAP server and manually moved all the folders from Windows to IMAP wich was already in the Linux machine. There were no errors or conversion glitches.

I hope this can help you in some way.

thunderbird

I use thunderbird for my email.

i copied the contents of the profile folder and then overwrote the contents of the profile folder under home/user/.mozilla-thunderbird/

i originally had my emails elsewhere in xp, so i copied them to a folder called mail and loaded thunderbird. then for each account that had now appears, i configured the location of the mail folder to mach where my mail actually was. i then closed and re-opened thunderbird and all was good.

i use freepops to also access my yahoo email from thunderbird, so moving those emails to mepis was easy too.

Using Mepis...and proud of it.
