UPGRADING TO KDE 3.4.2

This is a small how to for people updating to kde 3.4.2.
Logout and end session and login as root install as root or there will be ownership issues with things like konqueror.

#1.Open synaptic>settings>preferences = change system upgrade to smart upgrade (make sure all your repos are turned on in repositores)lock a2p.

#2. Reload and mark all upgrades and hit apply (this will take awhile so take a break)

#3. When it asks if you want to install the package maintainers, choose "I" for everything

#4. After its finished installing you need to reboot (don't bother looking around yet most of it dosen't apper till after you reboot)

#5. Log back in (you will already start seeing the changes from login)

#6. http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=26582
While your in control center you can set up the rest of the stuff you might use like auto login. Also there's a new feature in KDE Performance called System that will speed up your desktop loading a little). Also if you want to get rid of the big tip boxes goto Desktop >Panels>Apperence then just uncheck "Enable icon mouseover effects".
#7. The next thing is to turn on your delete in "Behavior" click on Show 'Delete'. Close Configure but not Konqueror.

#8. In konqueror side bar click on devices(the 3rd icon down) right click on it and choose set url change Devices to media.

#9. Still in Konqueror goto > etc/kde3/kdm then >right click on kdmrc then >Actions then >Edit(as Root) in [X-*-Core] change AllowRootLogin=false to true.(This is only necessary if you want to be able to login as "Root")

#10. In /etc/init.d >make a new folder called "OFF" then put hwclockfirst.sh and hwclock.sh in it. This is because with ntpdate your clock is being set 3 times. You can also put what ever you want to stop at boot. Example>wlan=i don't use, serial=theres no printer connected and so on.....

#11. Super user mode won't launch kwrite >You have to edit the menu and delete the extra entry for super user mode. Change the run command to just konqueror.check the box that says run as different user.work path>/usr/share/applications/kde

Alright that's all i can think of right now. I will edit as needed.

upgrading to 3.4.2

Hi kerry
Great job explaining the upgrade.

kerry's picture

For jon

Here's your guide jon, now u can update.Lucky for u i was just installing on another computer that had hard drive problems. One thing though back up your user file, because this is the second time i did a upgrade and it woudln't let me use my old user account. I was able to copy my user file to another partion then format and make my partions then copy the file back to the newly made home partion then install using that as saved home and then it worked. If you depend on your system i reccomend u just wait for the next release. I my self am running the 3.3.2test02 with only firefox and stuff updated.I have SUSE installed with kde 3.4.2 so there's no need for me to update just for the new look.(i'm testing super suse(1 cd) and like it so i might keep that till the enhanced suse comes out, It was a pain installing simple stuff, but now that it's done and it's set up like i want)

Thanks Kerry

Dang! It sounds as if, even though it's a "KDE Upgrade", that it in fact sucks up a lot of Debian, what with the "smart upgrade" (ouch).

Thank you for the detail. During the next couple days, I may be building a "developer box" using my production box for a client. It currently has 3.3.1-1 on it. I'm going to clone the hard drive so I may see how the "KDE Upgrade" works with that. If it goes well then I may "take the plunge". But the new release may be out by then Smiling

Hey jhon

I'm just installing mepis for a full upgrade(i finished playing with suse). I want to set up my extra mepis install with everything turned off. I'm giong to uninstall everything i don't need to surf the web then i'm going to upgrade it to to the new stuff. I plan on useing it for just internet. So i will have a mepis for everything and a fast mepis just for surfing on the web. I've done a quick test to see what i can expect and had that sucker booting up in in 10 seconds! Now i'm just doing a reinstall to clean every thing up so i can set it up the right way.

Hey jhon

I have a similar set up right now. I have M$ XP and mepis 3.3.2.test02(stock) on one drive and on my other drive i have mepis 3.3.2test02 with a full upgrade to kde 3.4.2. I'm downloading fedoracore 4test03 dev release to try so it's going to change very soon.

tried firefox beta 1.5 and

tried firefox beta 1.5 and thunderbird 1.5 beta the plugins and themes are not up to date, but they are faster than ever.Left them on mepis 3.3.1 test 3.Went back to firefox and thunderbird 1.06 on 3.3.2 test3.I have 2 computers one runs xandros and windows ME on one drive. The other hd is xp.Xandros boot menu allows me the choice to boot any one of the systems.the other computer has xp and mepis3.3.2 test3--upgraded to 3.4.2. mepis also allows you choice to boot mepsis or xp.The other hd has 3.3.1 test 03.thanks john

kerry's picture

ff 1.5

I like ff 1.5 it's such a change from the regular there new setup is still easy to navigate. I was surprized it was fast stock but when i did my usall tweaks holy cow, talk about instant loading. I can't wait for that one, but i'm not going to use it now as u said everything else is not up to date, it turned off half my extensions and my favorite theme(pimpzilla).

upgraded mepis

upgraded mepis again.downloaded and installed 96 more packages.system still seems stable.john

hi kerry went back to

kerry's picture

Yeah

I have also just skipped the upgrades as well. I am running mepislite 3.3.1-2test03 and mepis 3.3.2test03 mostly bone stock(I think i just did firefox and mplayer upgrades) I to am just waiting for the next version of mepis.

hi kerry are you having

hi kerry
are you having trouble with synaptic?sure am having lots it has dissapeared on 3.3.1-2 test3.Using kpackage now.
john

decided to go back to

decided to go back to 3.4.2.seems like there are a lot more packages when you upgrade from mepis 3.3.2.running well.had to go to this version because kdmserver would not let me continue with mepis lite 3.3.2 test one -well should not say that as i could run mepis when i ran it in root. what would cause this to happen-no updates were done and it booted normally then message kdmserver check your installation message showed up.does this happen a lot?looked in recent post and see this happens and noticed it does.thanks john

kerry's picture

Hey jhon

I think that's a user account issue. Next time try deleting the user account and make it again or making a new account so you can move your saved info to the new account since you can log in as root. I only had that problem when i changed versions (example:mepis 3.3.1 to mepis 3.3.2) and tried to reuse my old user account(preserve home). I have learn to add a new home folder during the install so it never happened again. Since i have several installs of mepis it's easy for me to copy my account so it will already be set up the way i like. I am now only running all mepislite versions on my computer(mepislite 3.3.2-1 stock, mepislite 3.3.1-3 updated(kde 3.4.2,FF 1.5 beta2) and mepislite 3.3.2-1 updated). I have dumped kanotix cause it was buggy and slow, but i still use there repos to install some of there stuff in mepis. I like this one program " knemo" that shows your internet status as a icon in your kicker and have added it to mepis(it's a kanotix program for kde 3.4.2) there are other things that i like in kanotix that i will be seeing if i can add to mepis. I know it's crazy, i like kanotix but i LOVE mepis. Any ways thats what i've been doing. Take care jhon.

kerry

thanks kerry thanks for info

thanks kerry
thanks for info will try if it happens again.the only 2 distros i use now are pc linuxos-9.1 and mepis.what did you think of kubuntu-i didn't like it and neither did my system- very hard to install and i feel there rating is to high.kanotix is alright and easy to install.thanks john

hi kerry you gotta try pc

hi kerry
you gotta try pc linuxos p.92-test one.i'm having a great time with it.seems like all packages are newest updates.still running mepis 3.4.2-waiting for new release- i find they are trying to look like windows xp.john

kerry's picture

Hey jhon

I just installed it last night. I've been playing with the settings tring to get everything the way i want it. So far it's going good. I finally figuered out how to boot using grub(I HATE LILO!). There's alot of settings hidden so i'm still working on things. So far i like it. It's going to take a little getting use to, i usally dont mess with RPM and TGZ distro's but i still try them(i just can't help myself). I've got my duel monitors up and running which is the most important thing to me. So far this one seems stable enough i've had a few lock ups but it was most likely my fault,as somethings seem to just run slow and instead of waiting i try and close it. This is my third install of pclinux as it did not like some of the changes i made, LOL. AS soon as get this sucker working right i'm going to mess with the synaptic and those repo's i havent got in to downloading stuff yet, i did install opera though since it was there. Take care jhon.

kerry

why do you like opera

why do you like opera kerry?i find it to combersome after using kde.maybe i'm being to windows like as i have been running windows before going to linux-especially mepis.kde is a lot like windows and i'm probably used to the format.have a good run with pc linuxos.i'm liking it a lot.john

kerry's picture

Hey jhon

I mostly use opera for downloading it works great you can start and stop it when ever you want, you can even stop it and turn off the computer and when you turn your computer back on you can resume the download. Also i noticed in pclinux " gaim " dosen't connect to firefox it dosen't even show as a choose, i hate using koqueror for internet. I just installed FF 1.5.b2 so i'll be fixing that gaim thing next. Take care jhon.

Jhon, you haven't come across things that need fixing for it to work the way you want?

kerry

hi kerry easy to update

hi kerry
easy to update using synaptic.configuration-packaging-synaptic software management.i find this system a little different than mepis, but find pc linuxos easy to use.gaim is networking instant messenging.fire fox -networking -www- firefox.haven't come across anything that needs fixing yet.will keep you informed.i'm using pc linuxos with no problems accessing network and talking to you.now back to favorite system mepis 3.4.2.system running great.
thanksjohn

kerry's picture

Hey jhon

Yeah, it's really easy to use i'm finding my way around easy. It's almost like Mepis but a RPM version. Most of the stuff is from mandrake and ubuntu though. I started out with mandrake(mandriva now) when i first started using linux so alot of the stuff is familiar to me. I have been changing most of the stuff to the way it is in mepis(example:added the tool side bar back to konqueror, put menueditor back in, put menu updater back in put k personalizer back in, etc.....). I just connected gaim to my FireFox 1.5 so now when i get mail it will use FF instead of opera. I also been changing the look alot(i love the alien city theme and fingerprint splash screen) you can kind of guess my theme is turning out to be really green. You need any help in changing any thing? Just let me know, i'm good for it. take care jhon

kerry

hi kerry i'm using amsn-it

hi kerry
i'm using amsn-it has its own installer built in.it connects with hotmail through ff-the only draw back is that it only uses the msn format-where gaim can access all instant messenging.thanks for reply and all the help -sure am collecting lots of info-just talking to you i have learned a lot about linux.thanks john

kerry's picture

Hey jhon

The way to make gaim open firfox is to set it manually.Go to preferences >browser>change browser to manual>were it says manuel put this>
/usr/bin/mozilla-firefox

I'm using Firefox 1.5 beta2 from my home folder so i pointed mine there.
I just downloaded the .tgz and extracted it in my home folder then i made the launcher for the kicker to open that one(add to panel> special button>non-kde application> put a title, mine is FF 1.5 b2>in executable i put the path> /home/user/firefox/firefox > click on the picture to add the icon) for mine. Then i removed the old icon(FF 1.0.7) from my kicker panel.

Funny thing it took me a whole day to relize my sound wasn't turned on, i forgot to open the kmixer>settings>configure> and check the box that says restore on login. LOL, there's actually a sound for everything.Wait till you burn a cd with k3b, they changed the ejection sound. Take care jhon.

kerry

hi kerry the info on gaim

hi kerry
the info on gaim worked for me thanks.new question when i downloaded fire fox 1.5 beta 2 and thunderbird 1.5 beta 2 i had trouble with icons.i installed firefox first went to properties>tools.applications and changed icon.then went to thunderbird and did the same-the only problem is that they both show fire fox.do you have a solution for this.i've tried this again and did thunderbird first and firefox second-now they are both showing thunderbird icon.seems like which ever icon i install first controls both icon displays.even tho f-f and t-b operate correctly.the icon displayed shows fire fox and the second shows thunderbird with a firefox icon .when thunderbird icon is installed first thunderbird displays ok.thunderbird icon shows fire fox.am i donig something wrong as i had no problems before i went to beta-properties worked at installing right icons in the right places.i noticed that the in stall of icons is a little differently in beta.john

kerry's picture

Hey jhon

You installed? I just extracted it in my home and i am running from the extracted folder, there's no installing needed. The original firefox is still there,i just don't use it. I'm not really sure i'm understanding you. Did you do the extraction and make a connection from the kicker to your home folder were you extracted like i said? Are you pointing them to the correct place, you should not put them in one folder to just use seperate folders it should just take three links to get to it (example: /home/(yourname)/(the extracted folder)/ either firefox or thunderbird).

Jhon, i don't use thunderbird but i'll try downloading it in a bit and see if i get the same problem.Oh and don't bother asking questions on there site, they don't do testing fixes. I posted in the general area and they just blew me off.

I'll get back to you on that, kerry.

Okay jhon, i did it with no problems. i down loaded to my tmp folder and extracted there(right click on the .tgz>extract >extract here). Then i went to window >split left/right view >clicked on the home button and draged the extracted folder there. Then i right click on the panel(were i want to put the icon) selected >add to panel >special button >non-kde application > button title: T Bird 1.5b2 >executable: /home/user/thunderbird/thunderbird >i choose the thunderbird icon >then pressed ok. Then the icon just showed up in my panel.

Thats a step by step of what i did. Take care jhon.
send me a email here >wpr0bkppthy37i2@jetable.net
