how to remove onboard net card from kernel?

I have an Asus motherboard with a built-in nic. Broadcom 4400
If I use it, I get throughput of 200 down and 450 up.
I have installed a 3com 900 nic and with it I get 2299 down and 540 up.
The motherboard has no way to dissable the nic in bios so while running Slackware, I removed the bcm4400 by recompiling the kernel. I want to run Mepis but every time I reboot I have to redo things to have it use the 3com instead of the bcm4400. I can't seem to find out how or where to recompile the kernel or is there a simpler way to remove the bcm4400 from the system ?
Any hints or help will be appreciated.
All flames will be disregarded with a grin.

I am sorry for replying so late but things got out of control here at home.
I did what you proposed and it worked just fine.
Thanks.

try as root: modprobe -r bcm4400
if that works you can add that at startup.
