Mepis is Slow

I've installed Mepis 3.3.2 a couple of weeks ago, and I'm very happy about it.
But sometimes I get into some troubles, like for example the DVD-ROM stop responding or the system became very slow, for no apparent reason.
That reminds me WindowsXP and I don't like it.
Any idea what can cause the problems?

Try going to /etc/default as root find prelink and change PRELINKING=yes to PRELINKING=no. It likes to come on from time to time and sucks up 98% of the cpu making the system slow and non resposive.
