MEPIS experience (Appreciation mail)
I know i have kind-of-criticized MEPIS in my last posting about sound config and all. Well that was my experience , but of course compared to windows. I have been a windows user/application developer for over 10 years now...so it is but natural that i felt bit frustrated when i found Mepis not so friendly.
But wait!!! I realized my mistake in next few days when i met other heavy weight flavours of LINUX namely Suse 9.2, Mandriva, Linspire, DSL, Fedora core 3,MORHIX, XANDROS and worst of the pack Debian.
Now excuse me there before you raise an eyebrow or two.. i know MEPIS is based on Debian...but MEPIS team has done simply awesome job transforming Debian from a tramp to Fank Sinatra.
I found MEPIS the easiest and friendliest linux among all others in 'linux world'.
Detection of my wifi was breeze in MEPIS which was a never ending nightmare everywhere except Linspire (though Linspire had many other issues specially CNR).
Synaptic is just cool in Mepis whereas i encountered Kpackage hound in debian which was hell. Could never get to install Gnome/KDE in Debian despite all the googling and investment in Borders store over linux books.
I can perhaps write a whole book about my experiences.
Linspire and Mandriva has better gui than Mepis but that is where it ends...reminded me of a phrase "Blonde Bombshell".
I am sure in future releases we will see better/friendlier gui in MEPIS too.
Best part about Mepis is , it's forum and support.
So all in all Mepis is "beauty with brains". Keep the good work up.
I would certainly now buy a CD of MEPIS along with extras to make my low level contribution towards Mepis.
