Getting SD, XD and SM cards to read on my laptop...

I made an interesting discovery.

I have a PC that has a USB port but no ports in which to plug in smart media cards, sandisks, etc... I purchased a Stratitec Universal Card Reader which plugs into a USB port and supplies ports for MS, CF, MD, SD, XD and SM. It works great.

I also have a Gateway M675PRR laptop. The SD memory card used in my KODAK DX7630 Digital Camera would not mount under Mepis 3.3 when I plugged it into the SD slot on the left side of my laptop. FDisk wouldn't sense it, either.

I plugged the Stratitec into the USB port and when I plugged the SD card into the Stratitec a disk icon popped up on my desktop and my pictures were immediately available. When I unmounted the icon as root it disappeared and I could safely unplug the SD card.

Try Rebooting

GreyGeek, with any version of Mepis prior to 3.3.2 (testing), you may need to reboot in order for Mepis and /etc/fstab to recognize the "drive". There are some issues with "hot-plugging" thumb-drives and other items in the USB port. My understanding is that it's much better under 3.3.2, but that's not officially out yet. So try a reboot (I know it's inconvenient) and see what the results are. If it works, then we have narrowed down the problem space Smiling
