If I for example run bash and need to perform a function that requires root access and I do a "su" and log in as root....is the entire system as "root" then? Or is bash only at root? This is an example of my ignorance of security in Linux. ):

Only bash, you can test this by trying to run something in KDE that requires root privileges, you'll see that it is still not working if you don't enter root password.
