Treading a New Direction in Redmond

Hey guys!

Check out the following site,

http://weblog.infoworld.com/openresource/archives/2005/11/gatesozzie_memo.html

which shows the internal Microsoft memos that were leaked tot he media recently.

Seems Microsoup is lost at the moment. They're talking about a grassroots adoption model that's been at the center of the Linux propagation for years. Maybe the air in Washington makes muddles the brain and makes programmers complacent ... or is it the stock options?

If there ever was a time to sink the behemoth, now would be it. GNU/Linux developers have to make their move NOW.

What move do you want them to make? The one from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon?

I hope this guy will stop playing all those PS2 games and live more in real world..

This post is dramatic but

This post is dramatic but obviously there is truth to the fact that Microsoft is struggling to lift itself out of stagnation. We can probably expect for it to continue moving in new directions, looking for new sources of growth, because it's current growth model of trying to get everyone to use Windows on the server side and get the rest of the world to adopt Windows on the desktop isn't working too well. Free and Open Source Software has put a stake in the ground and is a growing barrier to MS's growth.

You Didn't Get It

Precisely, Awk, FOSS has made a mark and has been making a lot of headway to challenge Microsoft's dominance. But it shouldn't stop there, right? Which is why I don't get the two other guys' comments ...

Yeah, I might have been carried away when I said, "sink the behemoth." Still, the community should be aiming at increasing usage of FOSS, particularly GNU/Linux. Isn't the reason for continually improving GNU/Linx is for more and more people (particularly those who work with desktops day in, day out) to appreciate that it is a better alternative to what they've been brainwashed with? When I said "make the move now", I meant that more advocacy and public awareness efforts should go hand-in-hand with the latest new technical improvement. Opportunities to know about FOSS should become more ubiquitous. Go mainstream. Court the media. Court schools. Court governments. Otherwise, all the creativity and development will just be for hobbyists.

Kudos, btw, to the tuXlabs project of the Shuttleworth Foundation for its recent award. Kids are the right audience to introduce Linux to.

I only wish I could be lucky enough to stuggle with stagnation at the point of total world domination in my field.

MS is making gains in the server market (which it has always been behind Unix derivatives in), and the only barrier to the growth of Windows on the desktop is that everyone already has it so there are no more people to convert. Microsoft's next move will be in fertility treatments or cloning, to increase their customer base.

Maybe everyone has Windows,

Maybe everyone has Windows, but:

1) that only includes people who currently have a computer. What % of the world population have their own computer?

2) of those people who have Windows, what version is it and are they planning to upgrade? I own Windows 95. This CD recently afforded me a $12 check from a MS class action settlement, so I guess it still has it's uses. This money will go to GNU/Linux. I haven't spent any money on MS software since 1998.

3) of those people who have Windows, how many have an unlicensed, unpaid for copy? I saw a recent statistic that this was the case of 25% of users in one western European country. How much can MS do about it without pushing more people towards GNU/Linux and other Free OSes?

MS is making gains in the server market, but it seems not nearly what it could without competition from the FOSS OSes, primarily GNU/Linux.

Now, what REALLY would make a difference, is if our governments, instead of bickering with MS over including Media Player or not in their OS, would put an end to the practice that virtually all renowned PC manufacturers sell an OEM-ed MS license with their machines, and refuse to give a refund if a customer does not need the OS.....

interesting tidbit

The local Continuing Education program at community colleges in my area is now offering INTRODUCTION TO UNIX And UNIX2-lINUX Desktop Installation .

Maybe MS is noticeing the pinch or the pressure build. In any case im sure they wouldnt be happy seeing this.
