Trouble with sound packages

No doubt this is somehow my fault, or that of hardware, but I have a couple of apps just not running or at least not right.

Worst is kscd, which simply goes into segfault at every startup.

Started from the command line, I can see the error messages:

royb@0[royb]$ kscd
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action.
(that last line is then repeated 13 more times).

At MEPIS install, I used the mobo built-in VIA chipset sound card; and switched to a vanilla Soundblaster Live! card (and, yes, shut off the VIA sound in the BIOS) to see if it would cure troubles with Audacity. No dice.

Audacity crashes when I try to run various "effects" menu items, and has various and sundry other odd behaviours, like just not recording properly from the LINE input from my record player. But since MOST of Audacity works, I'm guessing it's just a pre-1.0 buggy program.

I'm just now listening to a CD as I type: run by "xmcd" an alternate package - so that confirms my hardware works.

So, this isn't a plea for help; I'm just posting the problem in case it helps others users, or the MEPIS developers to nail down some problem.

If it's something I did, it doesn't take much misbehaviour - I have an awfully vanilla, reasonably recent hardware setup, and beyond a standard, keep-hitting-NEXT, MEPIS install, I've only installed a few packages; emacs, lame, a couple of other common apps.

Yup, got glx

the "load glx" line was indeed uncommented.

The trouble with these bugs in the free software world is that most people, like me, can usually find an alternative. I've found one - a command-line utility of all things, called "gramofile" that has no problem recording old LP's from LINE. So that about does in all my energy for figuring out this problem...

gramofile

hasn't been bettered for recording LPs
take care with the automated track dividing software - it may amputate the beginning or end of a file for you if it is very soft starting or ending.
