Mepis 3.4-1 rc1

I had 3.3 on my system and decided to put on the new 3.4 release candidate rc1.

Very nice. Smiling

It amazes me how well this distro is evolving. It didn't take long to download the ISO, burn the image and install it. Mepis as an OS is a keeper. . . I started using it with 3.3.1.

I've used Novel Suse 10.0, Linspire, couldn't get Kubuntu to work with my Wifi hardware. . .(I.e their software is still bugged up, even in the New dapper beta distro. . . .on the other hand Ubuntu worked very well, other distro's such as Redhat, Gentoo, FreeBSD were a headache when it came to connectivity to the internet with Wifi. (None of them worked for me. . . Sad

I still prefer 'KDE' over 'Gnome', but Ubuntu's Gnome was pretty sweet.

Overall I am pleased with the progress Mepis is making and the 'open-source' community as a whole with the software that is always improving. Mepis should be rated higher IMO with the 'Distrowatch' website.

Keep up the Goooooooooooood work!!!!

Richard

Distrowatch

I think you are correct. it should be higher, i have used every one of the distros you have talked about and I keep on going back to Mepis. I have even purchased a subcription with them in hopes it will help out you guys rock keep it up.

Agreed

I agree that Mepis is great and has come a long way. It is the ONLY distro that runs on my Dell Lattitude c600 and allows me to use my Cisco Aironet 350 and CDROM. I've tried SUSE, Xandros, and others, but "something" always need major tweaking. Not with Mepis. Once SimplyMepis 3.4 is "released", it might replace Xandros on my desktop. My only issue is getting Win4Lin9X to run under it. I need to e-mail Warren about that. Otherwise it's great!

Hello Linux (Mepis & Xandros)

Ready for prime time?

Mepis 3.4-1 rc1 sure looks good. Does anyone use it full-time?

I have been playing with it a lot using my favorite applications. And there have been no problems - just fun!

I am astounded at how far

I am astounded at how far linux has come in the last 5 years. Back in 2000 it was just a clunky curiosity. I have tried (even bought box sets) of many distros, SuSE, Red Hat and others. But it has been just in the last year or so that linux has really matured into something that could challenge Microsoft.

Mepis, Linspire, Xandros are all awesome. And there are many, many up-and-comers that we are just beginning to hear about (pcLinuxOS, damn small linux, Foresight Linux, I could go on and on).

Mepis 3.4-1 rc1

Yep its pretty slick but they may have left my old printer behind this time . No drivers included for my canon S600 . Im gonna try an upgrade and see if drivers come with it .

I may have to stick with 3.3.1-1 for a while . All the old stuff has to be recompiled with new libs etc. (the way i understand it) and i dont think my canon is a high priority. Not a problem though 3.3.1-1 is pretty slick too!

Yes, I've been using rc1 as my only OS since the day it hit the member's section.

I have had zero issues, none, that I wasn't able to get fixed pronto.

I've been using SimplyMEPIS for about a year, and MEPISPro for a while, and 3.4-1rc1 is the very best to date. Used RedHat since early 4.x days, up to Fedora, then SuSE and Ubuntu and this one is the best.

It's a laptop with fairly new gear inside, but everything just works, and I keep it on the bleeding edge with all the repos enabled, and updated.

This one, rc1, is a keeper!

SM 3.4-1 rc1 looks good. Anyone use it full-time?

Yep and in time you will be able to do successful upgrades, this computer was SM 3.3. From 1997 I have been testing Linux, for over 1 and 1/2 year I run Linux full time and my iMAC run's Linux too. I don't lose my files and I get no virus or ad-ware so far. Smiling

Good to hear from you all

I have Mepis 3.4-1rc on my laptop fulltime. As a middle school computer teacher, my laptop is often my traveling grading machine for student work handed. The laptop has been set up with SUSE 9.0 - 9.3, Xandors 2 - 3, Windows 2000 (please don't puke, I had to 4 the wife Smiling) each with their own problems and issues. I put Mepis back on the laptop last week and it is STAYING! Everything on the laptop just works. It's sitting next to me on the desk allowing me to grade papers. I love Guardog Firewall, it's way easier the Symantec or XP's friewall.

By the way. doing a power point in Linux to 7th grades earns me so "cool" points from many of them. The kids are hip to Linux, we now have to work on the parents Evil

Hello Linux (Mepis & Xandros)

Back to Mepis

After the above, I reinstalled Xandros Open Circulation on the same desktop to get Win4Lin running. It would, but with problems due to the age of the hardware, not the software. I EASILY reinstalled Mepis 3.4-1 RC1 back on the laptop last night. I had tried 3.4-2, but it's "too" light for me. I like the KDE control center and some of the apps in 3.4-1. Mepis also seems to use less resources on this battered and aging laptop. I can live without win4lin, it was for a windoze based grading program for my school. I can enter grades at school or on the Xandros desktop or Windows desktop I still have. Smiling

I have to ask: What's with the aquarium? Puzzled

Hello Linux (Mepis & Xandros)

distrowatch rating

if you think tht MEPIS should be rated higher on distrowatch, then visit distrowatch.com FROM A MEPIS BOX more often. The ratings are page hit rankings - the more MEPIS os's seen visiting distrowatch, the more hits per day MEPIS receives and the higher its ranking.

Win4Lin9x/Win4Lin "Home"

This s/w, which Win4Lin has had in development for roughly 10 years and has gotten it to work reasonably well ---with kernel modifications---

Warren and Linus have determined that MEPIS and the DCCA will no longer make these kernel mods and MEPIS no longer supports Win4Lin9x or it's stripped down sister "Win4Lin Home" as they would negate the DCCA's efforts at commercial debian standardization.

MEPIS Still Great!

Despite this, I was able to use WINE to get most of my grade program running. I have switched 2 out of 3 computers to MEPIS 3.4.1 RC 1. The "old" Daily Xandros Desktop is next this week. Yes, I found it very easy to get MEPIS up and running on my laptop and Sandbox desktop. I was even able to "rescue" my KDE KContact information and Mozzilla Thunderbird information moved over from Xandros.

Warren and crew keep up the good work. I miss the Lobster Dinner Pay Scale in the Store, but will be reupping the 12 month membership + some extra $$ Smiling
