Firefox
Hi all I've noticed that I was setting the fonts for my Konquer browser to my liking, and not my firefox browser seems to freeze on startup frequently.
Not all the time, but frequently the firefox comes up to my home yahoo page, and then just stops, I have to kill the app, then restart fox, sometimes this happens serveral time in a row until the page finally comes up.
I re-installed firefox from synaptic and no effect.
I then changed konquor fonts back to defaults and not effect
re-booted and restarted a few times.
???
Any ideas ?

I'll try it
I'm actually using the 3.3.1 still and simply upgraded to 1.07, and even re-installed it
Not sure what the deer park edition is, but please walk me thru it synaptic style please.
I'm assuming it's ok to use the firfox from the repositories etc.
perhaps I should un-install firefox and reinstall the mepis default firefox, then upgrade again or something.
What do you think ?

So I have now 1.07-1 a least according to the synaptic.
I wonder what to do now to solve this problem would a uninstall and re-install solve this, I'm not having any problem with konqueror or anything, just firefox freezing.
But it did not do that until I changed the web fonts in konqueror.
Not sure why firefox was effected, but anyhow I would like to solve this somehow.
I think it's fixed
I added the weather forcaster extention to firefox
And now it appears the the freezing on startup has gone away.
I was going to un-install it, and try again, but now it's working.
I don't know what the forecaster added or took away but it's working perfect and have not had a firefox freezup since.
Strange
Still freezing
I thought it did, but it's still freezing up.
I have to kill app and restart firefox several times before the page will actually come up.
If I start knoqueror, then firefox it seems to work
Any ideas ?
hi, does the weather
hi, does the weather forecast extension give you any warning when its going to freeze?
(only joking)
there's no link between firefox and konq fonts, i'd suggest thats a coincidence.
does the whole app freeze (like no menus working etc.) or is it just taking an age to connect/render a page?
If its just taking an age to render/connect have a google for disabling ipv6 in firefox.
personally think that opera knocks the socks off firefox, but that might not be the solution you're after...
Nice joke
I like your joke LOL Thats a good one
Anyhow I like firefox, but I have no real preference really. The only reason I started using it was because the Mozilla I was told was going to stop developing the Mozilla suite which I really liked as well.
Anyhow Firefox always worked perfectly not sure why it starte to do this.
It seems to do it also when the page refreshes while even in the forum sometimes I'll be typing and I'll see the page sort of refresh and the activity bar in the lower right will scroll for a second from left to right as if somehing were downloading or someting and then it will freeze.
But usually it mostly freezes on starting up the firefox browser.
I'll get a portion of my home page at yahoo and then it will freeze.
I kill it a few times and then it will just start working for now real reason for a while.
I'm considering a re-install, but I thought my days of doing this with windows had come to an end, I have not had to do this with any linux systems usually.
Well thats all I can think of for now I'm not sure if removing or un-installing firefox will do anything
Reinstall 1.0.7
Hi Agent86. I was playing with the 1.5 version of firefox also. Although I didn't have the problems you had, I had some "pauses" while I was testing. I would suggest simply reinstalling 1.0.7 and give it a couple days. Mozilla just made the "official" announcement yesterday. I haven't checked to see if the "official" version of 1.5 is available in the repositories yet, but 1.0.7 works so why muck with things right now right?
Oh, if you installed 1.5 over 1.0.7 then you may have lost some of your "extensions" (they may have become incompatible). So you may need to go back and reload them.

I noticed the same problem, and also the font lacked aliasing. So, I went out to the repository and installed about every truetype font and utilitity I could find. That cured it. DeerPark now looks sweet. I don't know if there is a connection but DeerPark seems to work fine. Some URL's hang for a few seconds before they display but with patience they appear.
Not sure what I have
I want to try that too, and not sure if I have dearpark or what I used all the us repositories and added the 3.3.2 repository also
I then installed firefox again, the latest one I have appears to be 1.0.7
so I'll try synaptic and the truetype fonts and utilities also do you recall where that was listed in synaptic etc.
Please advise
thanks
It seems to have worked
I did take your advise
However, I just did a search in synaptic for fonts
Then marked everything that I could see that Mepis had installed and Marked those for upgrade
Upgraded all those and Firefox seems to work without freezing and also appears to now startup much faster and browse a bit faster as well.
Thanks for the tip
I'm considering this problem solved for the time
Still Occasional Freeze
Hi all,
I thought this problem was completely fixed, however I do still have an occasional freeze.
Rare, and occasional, but still a freeze.
I don't know if I installed all the font things or utilities you did, but would like to install a few to see if this will increase reliability.
Please advise
thanks
Fasterfox?
Hi agent86. You installed the most recent version of firefox right? Have you installed the fasterfox extension? Could some of the "freezing" be because of various network lags and buffers? There were some good links on this forum instucting how to make various adjustments to speed up firefox, but they have since been combined into the fasterfox extension available through mozilla
And it does work with the latest version of firefox.
Jon
I'll try it
Thanks for the info,
I'll try it,
It seems that firefox is working perfectly, however the only freeze that now happens is on occasion and after the computer has been idle for a while
Like overnight sometimes I start fox and then it will freeze.
after I kill it and then start again sometimes 3 times, then it will come up and never do this again, until a long idle or something.
As long as I get past the initial freeze it keeps going smoothly and fast.
I've never tried the fastfox extention I'll have to try this and see what happens.
deerpark 1.5
Not sure it is the same problem but. I recently decided to upgrade to firefox dearpark release from synaptic (firefox not mozilla-firefox). Now flash sites are causing my browser to freeze. www.gymboree.com www.hallmark.com are two sites that cause my browser issues. I since tried reverting back to mozilla-firefox v 1.07 and I still have the same problem. If I leave flashplayer-mozilla uninstalled things works fine but several flash site are unusable.
IPv6
If you want to change the IPv6 setting, you can access it by typing about:config in the address bar and then ipv6 under filter should show:
network.dns.disableIPv6
It's set to False by default, you can set it to True with a right-click, select Toggle.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.dns.disableIPv6
I just upgraded to Firefox 1.5 (Deer Park) and haven't had this problem. Don't know if it would be any help but you can try running Firefox with a new profile: firefox -ProfileManager, create a new profile.
Splendid!
Septus, I'm glad to hear that the suggestions worked. It's great when others provide ideas, and then other folks package them up to make it even easier to use.
Pass the word (not capitalized)
Enjoy
Jon
I have the fasterfox
I still get the occasional freezes, I also upgraded to DeerPark, and same thing, but then went back to 1.0.7
Although the 1.5 looks most impressive and also the upgrade extention feature seemed to work with the flash plugin etc. but freezed my machine still it looks nice, I can't wait for the bugs to get worked out of this.
Even though this is not related but I would like to go back to the original 1.3 for now can anyone tell me how to do that ?
Thanks
Steve
Possible hardware issue
Ok guys,
We are experiencing this problem as well and are trying to track it down. We have this weird hunch that this may actually be a hardware issue for some of the symptoms that we are seeing. Here is the request. If you are experiencing Firefox freezing on any page that has flash please post your systems hardware. IE most specifically your CPU: P3 800Mghz Coppermine. Any other system info you can post will be appreciated. Also, if you are NOT experiencing this problem please refrain from posting your info so we can get a good idea of what is going on.
Thanks for all your help everyone.
Appears to be flash related
Hi all
I have been experimenting with this.
Example:
When search flash sites using google and then I go to a flash page from an originating site by clicking a link on that page or somethings, then a second browser window comes up with the flash page in it, it appears to be working, but once I try to close the window, then the original browser page that has the link to the flash site is now froze up.
Example re-stated in other words.
I go to a page that has flash templates or somethings I then click on one of the templates to review, then that page comes up with the originating page in the backround, I review the flash template page looks nice, then I finish and close the template page, not the browser is frozen
I have a AMD 2000, Nvidia FX440,512MB,AC97 Sound VIA chipset motherboard(syntax) AD266SV or something like that, and usb scanner, and usb external cdrw drive
All was working perfectly in the past even with upgrading to 1.0.7, however recently I re-install my computer with quadriple boot and added partitions and it worked perfect up until I upgraded to 1.0.7 and about 2 days later without a reason that I can think of it started to lock up. I thought it was realated to making changes to my konkqueror browser, which is why I re-installed everything, but as it turned out that was not the case.
Just a rehash on the events to date.
Hope this helps
what kind of sound card and what version of KDE
Actually it seems that Warren has tracked this down. It seems that there may be an issue KDE 3.4 and how it is detecting sound cards. For some reason it seems that KDE 3.4 is not detecting certain sound cards properly. What kind of sound card do you have? You can try switching your sound system to "OSS" and rebooting. If you need more instructions on how to do this let me know. This fixes the flash problems with Firefox believe it or not.
Matt
interesting...
My sound HAS been a little weird since that last apt-get dist-upgrade. And amaroK is slower than before.

FF is just about unusable
I had to reinstall Mepis last week and uprgraded to FF 1.07. Now I get the freezeups described above. Most of the time, Distrowatch, for example, causes a crash, but not always. Flash pages seem to always make it freeze, but there's no way of telling whether ONLY Flash pages are the problem. I've been using FF 1.04 and 1.5 with Vector Linux with no problems at all, so the KDE theory makes sense.
Specs:
Athlon 1800+
NVidia GeForce2 MXMX 400
KDE 3.3.2
C-media PCI CMI8738-MC6 (model 55) soundcard (onboard Asus MB)
I wan't to go back to 1.03 please
How can I go back to the original Firefoxe before upgrading
I don't see a way of going back to a previous version using the repositories and synaptic
Please advise
Thanks
I hate freeze ups
use synaptic
Use synaptic to remove mozilla-firefox. Do a regular removal, not a complete removal (it gives you the choice). The difference is that a regular removal lets you keep your bookmarks and settings.
Then reinstall firefox.
Or skip firefox and get Opera's web browser instead. you can download it from their website or add the Opera repository to Synaptic and install it that way.
# opera
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ sid non-free
If you need help using Synaptic or setting up a repo, just ask.

Thanks I'll try it
Here is where I'm at so far
I'm going to try the Opera also
Anyhow regarding Firefox, I used synaptic to upgrade to flash .61r version, it appears in the about:plugins sections allong with the .25r version
Also I updated java common- from .22 to .23, and also installed some extra ttf- or true type fonts that I thought might help, in addition I installed 2 other types of java things listed in synaptic
it was like some type of lib?java thing for mozilla plugin etc.
I can't seem to find them in the synaptic repository list now for some reason
Anyhow the conclusion of all this is that I still get occasional freezes, HOWEVER
Once I can get Firefox to load a page and leave the page up for a while
Then It will keep working, if I leave the browser open at all times it appears to work perfectly without any freezes
I've left my home page up all night last night and today not one freeze as long as I don't completly close the browser.
I don't know why but at least I can use my computer for now.
I hope this gets fixed, I would suggest that this has something to do with flash and java, but not educated enought to repair it.
I noticed if I remove flash using synaptic the pages never freeze of course I don't have flash functionallity
But the browser never freezes on startup.
But I believe this is the heart of the problem.
Please advise
thanks
Also
Hi again all
Where are some good lists of repositories please
I'm not sure where to find them or exactly the pros and cons of using them
I did once add the 3.3.2 repository which appears not to be working now, but did at first

Thanks for the repositories
Thanks for the repositories
Is there a website with lists of repositories anyplace
thanks again I'll try that Opera
What dist. and section
Hi
I see in synaptic the distribution and section fields
I've been using things like etch, then main in the section or sid, then main,
I see your line items showing etch main contrib non-free
Please clarify this I'm not sure I understand how to add them to synaptic
For example is there various etch dist. and sections
deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian etch main contrib non-free
Such as deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian etch,main
deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian etch,contrib
deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian etch,non-free
Is this what this means ?
Please advise
thanks
