Can I upgrade 3.3.1-1 to 3.4
Posts: 42
Hi to all:
Apologize for this basic question. Can I safely "upgrade" my 3.3.1-1 hard drive installation to the 3.4 version by using apt? If yes, what repository I need to add?
Many thanks, and best wishes for U.S. Thanks Giving to all.
serge.

I'm not sure what you understand by the word "custom" but Mepis kernel is the standard DCC kernel. It is "custom" in a sense that's not Debian kernel, but it's compatible with those and they are interchangeable.

A "custom kernel" is a working kernel that you have built for your system or a MEPIS kernel, it has been built for the MEPIS system. Simple, is it not.
My kernel is part Deb and part MEPIS and I can say it is a custom kernel. A custom kernel is a good thing.

Yes, you can easily upgrade.
Modify your mepis repository to this:
deb http://apt.mepis.org/3.4/ sid main
Then
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install mepis-oscenter meauto libstdc++6
(and also apt-get install any other packages you want that are held back -- be careful not to remove anything you need)
I think this upgrades everything but the kernel, which is a "standard DCC kernel version 2.6.12-10"
I haven't found where to get the kernel from yet, though it should be available on some debian site.
I looked at http://www.progeny.com -- it may be there but I didn't find it --
in any case it's probably not that much different from the kernel you have now
