What happened to Grub "Install to Root" selection
Posts: 23
OK, what happened to the "Root" selection for installing the GRUB loader? I'm feeling a bit uneasy installing Mepis 3.4.1rc1 on my hard drive as I have to select MBR or a floppy to install Grub. The last time I did this it caused me untold problems.
Secondly, Can I just do a distribution upgrade in Kpackage to upgrade to Mepis 3.4.1? I tried this but since I'm a noob I don't really undersstand how I can know if I actually upgraded anything. I then upgraded using Synaptic after resetting my repositories to "http://atp.mepis.org/3.4 etch". I already had Open office 2.0 and KDesktop 3.4 installed so I'm not sure what else I have to upgrade.
What are they not allowing us to install the grub loader to the root volume.

"What happened to the "Root" selection for installing the GRUB loader?"
Damn good question. 'Specially seeing as Grub borked on my install of 3.3.4rc1 and I was in particular need of this very tool.
Of course, publishing a friggin' changelog might help...

install to root

I was intending to install grub to root, but with no choice installed to mbr and then edited the menu.lst (which is really just cut-and-paste) and have everything starting now that started before.

My guess (it's only a guess)

My guess (it's only a guess) is that that was removed because many newbies installed to root instead of MBR and then when they could not reboot into Mepis.
There's of course a grub command that lets you install it wherever you want: grub-install /dev/hda1 (to install to hda1 root for example)

edit feature?

Last post should have read "3.4-1 rc1".
Have we lost the 'edit' feature on the forum?

edit: Obviously not or I couldn't write this. Allow me to rephrase, has the 'edit' function been changed or limited on the forum?

Want to use boot magic to select OS to load
Posts: 23
I want to be able to use Boot magic to select partition to load instead. If I don't install the Grub loader anywhere I won't be able to boot linux, right?? And I don't want to chance installing into MBR in case it screws up.

can you try the grub-install

Grubby fix

ADyson,
If you happen to have an older version of Mepis, you can use the 're-install grub' feature on the live CD to install grub to Root for 3.4-1 rc1.
In my case (dual boot w/ Ntloader mbr), this fixed grub but I still had to add a line to menu.lst (via live cd).
Drliz,
Nice link, thank you. Unfortunately, my system froze at the grub prompt.

Hi Folks,
I had the same problem that ADyson did I use boot magic and the installer didn't offer an option to install Grub to root. I used
a Mepis 3.31 disk to install its grub loader to the root partition.
Then I used the 3.31 live CD to to edit grub to get it to point
to the correct partitions. Everything works just fime so far.
Peace,
John
Grub install to Root

The install to root option is extremely important for new users, as I am. I am sure that it is a mistake to abandon this feature. I use a separate boot loader OSLoader OSL2000 which I strongly recommend over the other commercial products I tried. That said, I will probably get Grub installed properly using an old Mepis Disk.

In the latest announcement regarding RC3, Erin Melbert has already pointed out it will be brought back in, since the commuity had asked for it. So you will be a bunch of happy punters

Grub root

Interesting as on the kanotix forum, people were complaining about exactly the opposite ie being "forced" to install grub somewhere ie root or MBR.
I presume it is because the distro is a testing one and those testing it will have an extra partition for testing and are happy about installing to the MBR or choose nothing and then edit their original /boot/grub/menu.lst to chainload the newly installed Mepis. (I chose the first option)
To be honest it seems that your upgraded mepis might be as up to date as the new 3.4RC1 except for firefox and xorg (you didn't mention if you had it).
I have an upgraded (not dist-upgrade) my Mepis 3.3 bit by bit and I'm sticking with it rather than the new 3.4 as my 3.3 has been configured to how I want it and the new one doesn't give me any extras that I really want or need.
