How does "block device" apply to USB? What is "block device"?

There seems to be a common problem for USB flash drives. Mepis often calls them "not valid block device."
There are lots of suggestions for mounting usb drives but no one has explained what is a block device and how does it relate to usb?
It seems to be causing quite a bit of trouble for mepis that doesnt happen in windows or Ubuntu.
Of course, I have good reasons to just solve the problem, but I'm also curious as to why. And its always better to define a problem before solution. And I dont want to return to Ubuntu or windows.
If I'm rong just say so.

"Block devices" and "character devices" are the way devices are seen by Linux. USB drive is a block device.
