Hp Printer Problem
Posts: 86
I haven't figured this one out yet but I've got two printers an HP970C (parallel port) and a HP1220C on USB. Neither one responds when I try to do a print page test. . . . I've checked my setting in Bios and changed the IRQ's a few times and still nothing works. One printer can be set as default in the settings and the other as backup but nothing works for either. Any suggestions? All of the Cups printing software is installed. Everything worked with 3.3.1 and 3.3.3. and now I've got 3.4.rc1 on my system. Should I reload any software? Any help would be appreciated. . . .
Anyone else having printer problems?
Thnx,

It seems the HP drivers are faulty in the debian repos. I have a HP 2110 nd after upgrading 3.3.3-1 and installing 3.4 the printer no longer works. As I need my printer I have to use PCLinuxOS until this can be resovled.
I run Mepis 3.3 (KDE 3.4)

I run Mepis 3.3 (KDE 3.4) and 3.3.1-1, with two HP printers, without problems as well, haven't upgraded yet to Mepis 3.4. I wonder what happens if you installed an older version, eg. apt-get install hpijs/stable or testing?

While it may not be relevant to your solution, I am having no trouble running an old HP 540c with the latest MEPIS 3.4-1rc1, via CUPS, and no other tweaks.

Thank you burdicda, I now have HP JetDirect network printing again!

If you are running a laptop with a wlan card installing udev and removing hotplug will screw up your setup. Warren, where are you guy? Release candidates that can't print won't cut it. We expect better from you given the quality of Mepis to date. This is way to Ubuntuish.
I installed udev and I can now print, but I have lost my wlan wireless G card so I'm back to a crappy Orinoco at 1/5 the speed. I want my faster connection back and printing too.

No question wlan card, Linksys WPC54G no longer works when udev is installed, but printing works. Linksys card is seen and lights up, but cannot connect to network (it looks like its working in OSCenter but its not) Orinoco card works but shows up as eth1 and will not work if eth0 is started even with a different address and even when there is no other card installed. Not bueno.

I ran apt-get install udev and it immediately fixed my network tcp
jet direct hp printer BUT !!!
By doing so...it removed hotplug and that has affected my usb's my NIC
and now my system will no longer boot up...at all...
So off we go onto another adventure...

Yes, I got my printer but lost my USBs and CD!
I went back to hotplug.
I'm on S/M 3.4.1 and made the upgrades to the hplip as suggested. Now I see there are more upgrades to some of these----but the Mepis repo dies before completing the download.
As one other responder has mentioned---a release candidate that won't print is a VERY poor move!!

I just installed Mepis 3.4-2rc1 and having just read all of the posts
to my initial problem, I apt-get installed udev. Both my printers now work and I haven't seen any other problems cropping up as of yet because of this. BTW 3.4-2rc1 is looking very good. I burned the ISO today from an oversea's web server. Took 3 1/2 hrs. Only one stateside server was available with this new release candidate and the download would have taken 10 hours via cable modem. I can say it was worth the time. Mepis is getting better and better all the time.

Similar experience from me. HPLIP is a crock. Deleted. Install HP7130 with CUPS on localhost - NOTHING!
Check XSane - Works, so the USB is OK.
hmm..
Remove hotplug and install udev, it works through CUPS! Eggscellent, but what is the effect on hotplugging my USB devices?
Is this a Debian Sarge or Etch problem?
Ideas?
I shot an arrow into the air. It stuck! Anon
Got HP 5740 USB no print

Got 3.4-2rc1 and seems or appears to work nice, but no print
The hp utility will print an alignment but no test or anything else
So if I remove Hotplug and install udev, what does this actually do on my desktop will this create any problems for my othe usb devices like camera, webcam, external usb CD writer etc, scanner
Please advise should I really do this or not ?
Thanks
udev fixed my printer

Ok I hope nothing broke, but I removed hotplug with the associated ipw2100-modules-2.6.12 etc. I think it was just one
Then installed the udev
I used synaptic and marked hotplug for removal and udev for install
And printing nicely now
It's on my desktop so I dont' think it broke anything for the wireless lan etc. so I should be ok
Anyhow know if this will get fixed in the future etc. or if this actually broke something I should know about
??
Hp Printer Problems possibly solved for some. . .

My original post I failed to mention some information for some of us that are having printer problems with HP. My two printers (both) are Hp
1220C and 970C. One is set up on my parallel port and the other is plugged into my computers back USB port. They now both work after having
installed 'udev' with synaptic. My sound works (via chipset AC97 codec. I also have a compact flash, smedia, microdrive unit plugged into another
USB port. It also functions. So if this is of any help to anyone try the
'UDEV'file install using synaptic or try one of the possible alternatives suggested in Printer Update Revision 1.1 Announcement and try all of the steps outlined their to help fix this problem with upcoming release of v3.4 Mepis.

After removing hotplug and installing udev still problems

Thanks for all the hints here in the forum, I deinstalled hotplug and installed udev. My printer works fine then, but after rebooting, I still have a dead printer again.
Does anybody has an idea to solve that? Thanks

Release candidates that can't print won't cut it. We expect better from you
If you install a release CANDIDATE, Warren is TELLING YOU that it's not ready for a production machine; you are essentially a beta tester. You should expect the first release candidate to have problems, sometimes big problems. The whole purpose of a release candidate is to find problems like this. You can't expect an open source project to have the resources to test something as complex as an entire distribution. The tradeoff for getting the latest, greatest software for free is that things won't always work. How we users help the project is report the problems, not whine about them.
If you want a version with all the bugs worked out of it, install a stable release. At that point, perhaps, your complaint would have merit.
Warren and his crew are very good at what they do, and they give away their work for free to whoever wants it. The stable releases are solid, much more so than most proprietary software houses out there. They don't always do things the way I would, but the beauty is that if you don't like something, you can always go back to the Debian repository version or you can open the hood and fix it. If you don't want to fix it, there are lots of underemployed techies out there that would fix it for you for a reasonable price.

Has anyone had this problem before?
Thanks

I have a deskjet 895cse and got the same result.
Something related to the hpijs driver is failing. I tried the 'CUPS-gutenprint' driver and that seems to work just fine. I dont' see any loss in funtionality or quality but it likely depends on the printer.
Like yourself, I've never had a problem with earlier Mepis releases and using the default hp driver.
