iTunes

Hi all

I want to download and play music for learning songs for out band.

It does not have to be itunes, but anything really

I want to pay for the music I would guess that the legal method would be pay for each downloaded song and not a subscription type of P2P thing?

Anyhow what site or package can I use with linux and download music the legal way ?

Also not using crossover etc. I could just get crossover for itunes which I may end up doing, but I would prefer to get familiar with a linux package that will allow me to download and listen to music or burn to CD and take on the road to band practice

Please advise
Thanks

Wow, a question I can actually answer !

1. RythymBox looks and works like iTunes but is missing many features. For example, it won't edit ID3 tags. Linspire uses Rythymbox but calls it Lsongs.

2. AmaroK is the best audio player i have ever used. Simply amazing. Great user interface and with many useful features. Examples: it automatically downloads song lyrics and looks up the wikipedia entry for every artist. Nothing on Windows even comes close this program. It was AmaroK (along with Firefox and K3b) that made me leave Windows forever and go Linux full time.

3. EasyTag is a really neat ID3 tag editor.

4. K3b for burning audio and mp3 cds. Make sure you edit the prefs so it won't insert those stupid underscores in your filenames!

5. Azureus for downloading bitTorrents. There are many good torrent websites (www.torrentspy.com)

6. Limewire for p2p sharing.

7. MP3.com is/was owned by the same guy who runs Linspire. Surely, it is linux compatible.

you may have to update your sources.list file to get some of these programs from the repos.

How do you pay

I don't understand those, I can't seem to find anything about paying for the songs downloads etc.

the players I'm not so concerned about, but actually getting the downloaded song, and paying for it

Do any of those that you've listed have any legal downloads or are they just P2P like Limewire illegal downloads etc.

Crossover

I don't really want to do this, but I downloaded the trial of crossover and configured the itunes and quicktime included with crossover.

Well actually I selected to install the itunes from the crossover configuration window, and it appears that it will by default also install quicktime.

Anyhow it appears to work perfectly so far, using the defaulte 4.9 version and following the crossover suggestions not to upgrade when asked.

So it works.

But isn't there any other options for a navite linux app. or legal song downloading.

?

try this

Start firefox click on the medis icon at top > Shoutcast and poke around with it . It should lead you to some legal downloads if youre using 3.3.1 or later . Works great to listen to tunes of most any taste or age . I listen to tunes and surf at the same time , and i seem to remember some downloads while there . In my experience its pretty hard to find a music site that doesnt offer music sales .

Give it a shot ya might like it . jim

why iTunes - try www.allofmp3.com

why iTunes - try www.allofmp3.com
Why do we have to download a music/multimedia monster to d/l a music track or two. Realnetworks have also gone to a simple [there is that word again] browser format for accessing their pay for music content.

I guess I wasn't as helpful as I thought...

anyway,
MP3.com has legal downloads.
and amaroK is way better than iTunes for playing those files.

Allofmp3.com seem to have downloads I can buy, I wonder why so cheap.

And I'm guessing it's legal

And thanks for the tip on the amarok I'll have to try that too.

Why iTunes? Some reasons why

I have tried most of the suggestions in this thread. Why iTunes? Because it is the most full fetured app and integrates with the iPod for music as well as podcasts and video. Now to be sure you can do all the things iTunes does with multiple apps, but it is a multi-step and error prone process for some of the functions. So far I have not found a way to get all the iTunes functionality with any of the emulators such as Crossover, Vmware, etc. So to work with my iPod unfortunately I have to boot into Windows, the only thing I boot into Windows for.

However I am confident, with the fast pace of Linux growth and ingenuity, that soon a solution will be available.

re:iPod

One of the linux mp3 players works with iPod but I forget which one. I think it is included in Mepis 3.4.
