Can't Install Camera in SimplyMepis 3.4-1rc1

In my testing of 3.4 I've found one problem so far. A Sony CX7525 camera that worked with 3.3.1 is not recognized in 3.4. Previously I could plug in the camera, it would automatically mount and the pictures could be viewed. The pictures were also available in DigiKam. Now the OS does not mount the camera and although DigiKam sees the camera, it will not open the photos for viewing (but I can see the picture file names). I tried to view the camera's flash card by installing it in a usb card reader that worked in 3.3.1. Although the reader itself mounts, the media is not seen or mounted.

The camera is properly recognized as a USB device.

I've tried this on three very different systems so far with identical results (various hardware/cpu/mb combinations). Two of these were running 3.3.1 previously, one was just built.

I've followed a number of the treads on Mepis Lovers but none of the suggestions work.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Darrell

Try

Try this:

My guess is that Mepis 3.4 uses a different system for USB (I think it uses udev instead of hotplug) but I'm not sure.

3.4-1rc1 still using hotplug not udev yet

SimplyMepis 3.4-1rc1 still using hotplug and KDE 3.4, KDE 3.5 uses udev - which includes hotplug, thats why you lose hotplug when you install udev.
My understanding... please correct me if wrong... I won't sulk for too long... NH

AdrianTM,

Thanks for the link. Tried that and here's the output:

With the camera:
usb 2.2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
libgphoto2: loaded successfully

With the Card Reader (4 ports):
attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 0

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Darrell

Put in /etc/fstab something

Put in /etc/fstab something like:
/dev/sda /mnt/flash vfat noauto,users,exec,umask=000 0 0

and don't forget to make a /mnt/flash folder.

OK, I made that entry and got no change in results, but I noticed another entry in fstab (that I don't believe was there before):
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb vfat,ext2,hfsplus,noauto,users,dev 00

After testing the previous entry I removed it and the above entry and rebooted. The second entry (/dev/sda1) came back but still no joy. When attempting to mount the device it gives the message :
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device.

Finally I found an old Sandisk flash card reader lying around that uses a compact flash card. I plugged it in and after rebooting it shows up as /dev/sda1 with the following entry in the dymamic section:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 vfat,ext3,ext2 noauto,users,exec 00

I was able to mount it and read the card. Great, except this card doesn't work in the Sony camera I'm trying to use. One major difference in the two card readers is that the one I'm trying to use is a multi-card reader and the Sandisk accepts only compact flash cards.

Does this additional information give you any more ideas?

Thanks,

Darrell

Thanks for trying AdrianTM. I'm going to try and locate a single card reader that's just for the MMC that works with the camera and check the results. I know prior to the 2.6 kernel that I had issues with multi-card readers on other distros.

Appreciate the help.

Is anyone connecting a digital camera on 3.4-1rc1

So if 3.4-1rc1 is still using hotplug what's causing this not to work? I thought I had another card reader working but it wasn't, so at this point I can't get any system loaded with 3.4-1rc1 to load any camera or a card reader although flash drives work with no problem.

Confused here

Confused here,
Just accessed a Fuji-Film S3000 digital still picture camera via it's USB cord and a USB hub becuase card reader does not take a XD card.
Worked no problems. Just pops up on desktop.

Just tried to access a MMC card via multcard reader will not mount card. Both via hub and direct connection.

So far all other USB devices work out of the box, even Logitec Notebook pro web cam via usb hub.

Still trying to get usb HP printer working [not sure if it's the printer, me or MEPIS yet], yet to test usb scanner/s.
NH

Try this...
