I'm new to MEPIS. I have dowloaded the open office 2.0 file, extracted it to a folder. Now how do I install? I can not figure out KPACKAGE or SYNAPTIC Package Manager?
Thanks

You did not say which OpenOffice.org 2.0 package you downloaded. Assumung you downloaded the one that ends in .tar.gz, and that is what you extracted:
Start File Manager - Super User Mode
Open the folder that was created when you extracted the package files.
Open the folder called RPMS
From the Menu at the top of your file manager, choose Window > Show Terminal Emulator.
In the terminal window, type in: alien -k *.i586.rpm
Press enter and go make a cup of coffee.
After a few minutes, for each .rpm file, there will be a .deb file created. Don;t interrupt the process until you are SURE alien has finished. It can take a while.
When it is all finished, try: dpkg -i --force-overwrite *.deb
I am not sure if the force overwrite is needed in the final version. It had to be used in the betas to resolve some file conflicts caused by alien.

After writing all that, I checked the documentation. According to the user guide, OpenOffice.org 2 is supposed to be available in .deb format, but I'm stuffed if I can find it anywhere.

thanks. That worked as you said. now getting Mepis lite to recognize office. I'll try the force.
On SimplyMEPIS office 1.1 will install but on MepisLite it does not. On my desktop I can run SimplyMepis but on my older laptop I'm trying MepisLite since it runs better.

install OppenOffice 2.0

It is not included on MEPISLite and I'm trying to run the lighter version on my old laptop. It will install v1.1.3 if I do an upgrade or something like that through KPackage but not 2.0 V2 has better compatibliluity with MS Office 2003 and since I need to cross platforms I want to install v2. I tested the compatibility on the Windows version2 of OpenOffice. Now I want to carry this over.
Thanks
Al

It's in the Sid/unstable reps. You need to enable it in your apt/sources.list or through synaptic.

Hmmm ... if you have Debian unstable repository configured in your /etc/apt/sources.list, OO 2.0 should install with apt-get, at least with an apt-get install openoffice.org/unstable. Otherwise you can download the deb at:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/editors/openoffice.org
To get Mepis to recognize OO, it sounds like you need to modify your file associations, either by right-clicking on files and choosing open with, or in Control Center under KDE Components.

Hi
Are you sure it is not installed on your system by default ?
Check from K-menu - Office
